So guys, I'm in the market for a lightweight AR-15. I want it with an A1 upper. Sort of a KISS rifle. I'd get a Colt Sporter II, but those things are like $1500 and up, which is way more than I can pay for this. Especially since I eventually want to get it SBR'd.

And so I happened upon the DPMS Panther Lite 16. It's pretty much exactly what I want, except the barrel isn't the right twist (I prefer 1/7 over 1/9, but I can live with it for now), it doesn't say what the barrel diameter is though. Anybody know? .625"?

Then all I'd need is an old-style (probably repro) Colt CAR stock, and it'd be done.

HOWEVER. I have honestly had no experience with any DPMS product, so I figured I better get some intel on it before I plunk down the $780 or so it'd cost me.

I did briefly consider rolling my own, but I'm not sure I could beat the DPMS on the whole price point. Daniel Defense makes the barrel I want (.625" Carbine gas in 1/7, 16"), and I could get a complete lower from Del-Ton + CAR handguards, an A1/2 flash hider, BCG... But by the time I got everything to put it together the way I want, I'm getting up around the $900-1000 mark. If'n I wanted to throw that much money at it I'd just get the Sporter II and have exactly what I wanted in the first place.
