hi folks!

well I picked up my AR finally, a DPMS Sportical.
Ive put about 250 rds thru it in the last 2 days, no problems. learned about how to take it down n clean it and all the good stuff.
I got a truglo red dot scope for it, nothing overly special yet, but it works, and its functional for what I need it for.
Later on when I can afford to dress it up a bit more, Ill get a front handgaurd with rails, a taclight, QD mount so I can interchange between a scope for yotes, and the red dot for around the yard.

I only zeroed it in for 50yds right now, but it is darn accurate, and I really like how it handles.

decided to test it out on an old car Ive got, Ill get some pics up of that later so you can see how it preforms on various parts of a vehicle.

this thread will kinda be like my diary for this rifle, Ill update it regularly with different reports, take requests for target/testing... Ill try n make it interactive n fun. please feel free to hop in and do this with me!
Im also gonna have lots of questions along the way, as this is my first AR, and Ill be looking to make it the best tool for my situations.

thanks folks.

sweet rifle man! Just got my DPMS a few weeks ago!

I waited 7 months for it and let me tell you it was well worth the wait.

I use Contact cleaner to de-lube and de-carbon all the parts, then I oil em all up with CLB and Mobil one!

Any way! Enjoy it man! And keep it CLEAN!!! : )

hey folks! thanks!

possum, nice to see ya!
for shure, Ill definetly throw some more pics up, Ill try to tomorrow, I get real busey.. 2 kids, 2 dogs, a 50hr 5 day work week, and a big yard do that to a guy... lol.

Ill get some pics of the car.. it definetly needs a new windshield, and it prolly wont start anymore would be my guess ;)

Im grouping about an inch and a half with 3 shots at 50 yds, from a crouch.. so not too bad. Itll get better this weekend when I can go pick up more ammo and get myself a few hours of handeling time.

talk with yall later!

Hi all!
couple more pics of the rifle.

I still need to get some target pics, and pics of the car and what kind of pennetration this package provides..

bout 500 rds thru it now, no hiccups yet Im glad to say.. hitting what I aim at nicely, however I havent shot past 50 yds yet.. its set up as a yard,HD gun right now.. Ill shoot it out farther this weekend, and get a scope soon for 100yds plus, and see how it does.

I know I want a handgaurd with rails, so I can mount a front grip, and a taclight.. any cost efficient suggestions would be great!

thanks folks.

i know what you mean. thanks for the updates.

ok...... as promised, the car....

a Dynasty. it used to work, definetly wont now.
Ive worked 9mm and 5.56 on this one.. most the 9's were aimed at the hood, glanced off then glanced off the windshield.

all the 5.56 punched thru the windshield clean, but showed ALOT of fragmentation on the front and back seats. hood hits drove thru. frontal hits went thru the radiator, some continued on into vitals of the engine..

to sum it up.... it dosent even nearely push thru like a 7.62x39.. but it still does extreme damage, enuff to stop a threat fast.

i wanted to see a lil more raw pennetration....

so I nabbed a 1/4 inch chunk of raw steel, and took 4 shots at it from 50 yds..
grouping was decent.. I diddnt measure it but it was ok from the shoulder with a RedDot I havent entirely zeroed..

yepp, it punched right thru, like butter.. I wouldnt wanna be on the other side. however Im willing to bet there wasnt a whole lot left after it went thru.

so this next round Ill have 1/4 inch steel, then 10 feet back Ill place a papertarget, and a milk jug behind that (because I cant afford gelitian)..

anyway heres the results.

Awesome! We need more of these kind of picture threads. I just put my AR together last week and sent the first 100 rnds downrange and could only wish I had something like this setup to shoot at.

So was that the AE or Federal, or something else you were using on the steel?

Looks like a lot of fun, and nice report!

Man, everyone talking about their AR's is getting me real itchy. I should finally have mine Thursday. I can't wait!

surfingguru, thanks man, yeah I enjoy livivn in the woods n being able to do these kinda tests... dont get me wrong, bunnies n yotes are fun to blow up, but I also like to test what I have against material targets aswell.... might aswell know what can be done with what ya got, (it also puts alotta ends to debates by mall warriors ;) )....

jp, lookin foreward to hearing about yer new addition to the family :)

tim R, hey I hope you enjoy the thread, afterall, you, amongst other THR members helped me choose this weapon... so thank YOU!

Ill get some more pics of inside the car as soon as I have time to resize them.

oh yeah, it was the AE XM193 on the steel.. I did try out the wolf.223 and the Federal stuff on it too.. all pushed right thru..

but heres a damn good reason NOT to buy wolf .223 even if its only $5 a box. (see picture! )
needless to say, I was extremely dissapointed.... How the HELL do you pack a HP into a box of FMJ.... or if it was a mfg defect, thats even worse.... regaurdless, thats the last time I buy wolf ammo for my AR...

however, it will continue to run in my SKS's. as a rock packed over powder would still fire outta the S's.

I don't think one hollow point out of a couple hundred would deter me from buying inexpensive ammunition.
I know I want a handgaurd with rails, so I can mount a front grip, and a taclight.. any cost efficient suggestions would be great!

Cost efficient and AR-15's usually aren't synonymous, I think the grip lights are at least $300 and the lights are between $175 -$300 when I was at the local shop a couple days ago. I think if you really needed a light you could use a barrel clamp with some tape and a lithium flashlight light (the lithium ones are really small and bright) for about $30.

well, thats the difference between me n you.. :) I wont use ammo from a company that cant even pack ther gear right.. but again, thats me... not you....
so ya know, it was one hollowpoint out of 20.. not a couple hundred. n I aint meaning t0o deter you, Im merely updating my DPMS Sportical "Diary"....

btw, the only one issue Ive had so far, was a feed, from the wolf ammo, today, coulda been the mag, shure, but other ammo has functioned flawlessly....
yet again, like I said, Ill use Wolf ammo in my SKS's, as its been primary for ammo in them, and never failed, tho its genaric ammo... but today I seen just how genaric it really was, and Id rather not use it in my AR unless thats all there was to use... but again thats me..

asto the handgaurd, taclight n front grip are concerned, my brother in law, SEAL team, is donating something nice next month, I cant wait to see what it is!

in the mean time I have a Cyclopse (cant recall the model) light that is extremely efficient for now. just wish it was mountable.

Mostly, Im looking foreward to getting a Scope on this thing so I can see what its able to do out at 300. so, Ill continue on with the reports I have, and hopefully folks will be able to gather somthing from them. if nothing else, like I said, Im just doing a mere bit of recording..

allright, I resized a few more pics.

one pic is from the back side of the radiator, hit by 5.56, 55 gr AE stock. made a nice lil mess.

the other pics are the front, and back seats.
as you can see, there is ALOT of fragmentation all around. while I can tell many bullets went thru the front seat into the back. nothing made it thru the backseat/trunk firewall.. and nothing out the trunk..

regaurdless, I did not notice too much bullet stray from impact on the windshield, onto the seats.

one shot clanced off the dash and stuck in the steering wheel. Ill nab a pic of that one in the next few days.

like I said before. I wouldnt want to be on the recieving end, inside a car being rained on by 5.56.... however, youd have a better chance than if you were getting shot at by 7.62... niether would be cool.....
but this is the results of my testing.

You should be seeing some deflection because typically the bullet will take the angle of the windshield, also it will seperate from the jacket and break at the cannalure but that also depends on the range that you are shooting

Until you get your new handguard I would suggest you use the mag well as a vertical foregrip ( do not use the magazine since it could cause issues with reliablity and the mag release )

I have used wolf before and not had any problems with it using my RA XCR but I have noticed that it is not the greatest quality, for cheap plinking ammo I use Silver Bear

I have used the 2x Tru-Glo on my RA XCR and the thing I noticed is that you have to have the exact same checkweld because your zero will be way off if you dont

Just some thinks I have noticed in my shooting and the classes I have been to I hope it helps you

Enjoy your new Rifle and Stay Safe

thanks tac!
could you please elaborate on "checkweld"?!
I dont believe there is any magnification on this tru-glow. kinda one reason I chose it over a 40mm x1.5

most of the shots at the car were under 25yds.. there was plenty of fragmentation, so Ill need to paper target a seat in order to get a more accurate picture of deflection...

however, shooting multiple calibers at multiple windshields, Ive learned the science and theory of things are quite different from many results.. Ive had (mm punch straight thru with no change of angle, on the first shot.... 7.62 goes thru most anything (within reason) with no deflection.

but I am interested in findin more about what a lil 55gr bullet will do on a fresh windshield.. tho it has shown little deviance of path thru car doors.... however fragmentation has been quite obvious!

the "push thru" is what Im interested in.. and in time, we will see what I come up with.

thanks for stoppin thru!

I have to have my cheek in the exact same place everytime or I get signaficant changes in zero I have been off at 20 yards before by 2-3 inches because I had a different checkweld and out at 100 yards I was not even on target it is because of the parrallax of the scope

I hope this helps
