Any of you guys come across one of the stainless steel receivers that DPMS has on their website? Better than the standard? 1.75 lbs stripped weight....
So I am going to ask you, why do you assess this material to be a quality attribute?
Stainless weighs more than aluminum and is more corrosion resistant. So, do you want a much heavier rifle?. Ever humped an 11 pound rifle? I have a 17 pound NM AR15, let me tell you lugging that thing 600 yards to the pits is no fun. By the time you take advantage of any added corrosion resistance stainless would provide the whole rifle would be hopelessly rusted.
If you examine the AR design, Stoner made some clever design decisions that reduced the weight of the rifle. By aluminum in the lower or upper he made a much lighter rifle. The lower and the upper only have to carry the weight of the barrel and buttstock, plus a little carrying stress. You do not need steel in these applications. The components that carry an actual high stress load are the bolt locking lugs and the barrel extension. (I think that is the name) These are steel. As they should be.
Why spend the extra money on stainless? What do you really get?
