I have a 1851(.44 cal) and '58, and am looking at maybe getting a Dragoon. I have no experience with them. So, how do they compare to the ones I have? Any characteristics that I'd like over the '51? And what model to get?

Thanks in advance.

The differences between the Dragoons are essentially cosmetic, so there's not much to recommend one over the other. The change in cylinder stop notch shape between the 1st and 2nd models was a minor improvement, but that's about it.

The main difference between a Dragoon and what you have is substantial: it's a significantly bigger gun. It's quite noticeably heavier and the grips/grip frame are bigger, so it's pretty much a two hand hold gun. It also holds another 15 grains of powder, which is substantial; not only can it load much more powder, it's capable of withstanding the heavier shock, so you can reliably fill it up and bang away, making more smoke and flame than ever before.

The grip on a Dragoon is the same as the grip on the 1860 colt. At least all mine are. The trigger guard, where it attaches to the frame is a bit longer on the Dragoon models.

The frame on the Dragoon is wider and longer to accept the larger cylinder.

Your 1851 may have the larger grips of the 1860 so the grips may be the same. If you have Navy sized grips you will notice a difference.

The weight will be substantially different.

Later, I will post a photo of the Dragoon next to an 1860 and an 1861 to show differences.

Bottom line, Dragoons are fun to shoot and they are the perfected Walker!

Sorry for the delay in post photos.

Here is a group shot of the Dragoon, 1860, and 1862. These are the three frame sizes that were offered by Colt after the Walker.

This photo should anaswer any questions about size differences.

Here is a photo of the Dragoon and an 1861 (same size as 51).

Hope this helps.
