I shot my Dragoon today at American Shooting Center here in Houston. Notably I was the only person shooting a black powder revolver. In fact there was no one besides me shooting a black powder anything. I've come to realize that most shooters at ASC could give a hoot about black powder weapons. Instead, they're consumed with the latest plastic semi-automatic pistol with laser sights and super fat clips and blah, blah, blah…

Anyway, to each their own, I suppose.

But I love my new Dragoon: I like the name, its heft and the way it shoots. Following is my target from ten yards shooting off-hand. The results are not spectacular but I’m happy with them. I would love to hook up with other black powder shooters in the Houston area, so if you’re out there and want to get together, give me a shout.

Ah, thats alright. Most of the High-Tech Super-Black Plastic Shooters would be lost if you handed your Dragoon to them and said to go get 'em. They'd ask "Where do you plug in the recharger for this thing?"...

Now at my range, it's a different story. If you show up and DON'T have at least one BP weapon, you get thrown out!! But then the range, IS my range! :)

But yeah, even in the 80's when the 1911 craze hit big in Ft Worth, public ranges were littlered with autoloaders and such and they'd take a peak at me with Dragoon blazing and Navies popping and such. I loved the look I'd get when I'd open up with the Dragoon with a full tilt load. The smoke would have them gagging!!! It was a riot! :)

Hang in there and show those folks what real guns can do....

Wish I could come along but I no longer travel for work. I do shoot Dragoons, 1860s and such so I'll be there in spirit.

I did try to like a 1911. I carried it for about 6 months and while I got very familar with it, I never developed the warm and fuzzy feeling I get when I carry a revolver.

Real guns are wheel guns!

StrawHat,

There's something about a revolver that just makes ya smile huh? A BP revolver keeps that smile on your face all day!!

45-70 Ranger / Wade: so you have your own shooting range? Wow, that's outstanding!

Is your range open to the public? I travel to Fort Worth to visit family from time to time, so I could easily swing by the range for a black powder session.

My parents live in Ridglea Hills and my brother lives in Overton Park; are either of these places near your range?

Jason,

I live way back in the woods south of Athens a ways. I left Ft. Worth after I retired. That was in '03. And it's not a public range by any means. I have set up my own range in the woods good for 100 yds. with a cleared shooting lane. Just a few folks ever come by to shoot though. Mostly I use it for testing weapons that I repair for a local shop that has no gunsmith, and of course my almost daily blasting with my own! :)

I'm hard to find as one of my guitar buddies found out. He tried to locate me with his GPS thingie and got sent 10 miles in the other direction! Just on old Ranger sniper hidden in the woods......that's me.....far from the beaten path.
