Dream gun for hunting

I'd be happy to find one treasonably priced!

One of my "dream guns" is a 760 carbine bored out to either .358Win or .338Federal. I've bid on multiple guns on Gunbroker, but I'm just not willing to pay that much on a rifle I'll end up putting a lot of $$ into to "prefect" it. I want to build my concept of the "deep woods carbine" even though we've got something of a deep woods shortage here in KS.

I finished my .260 Rem M7 "dream gun" (minus load development) this month:

The modifications to my M7 in .350RM; Manners stock & Cerakote, are this years project. Then will come the 760 or 7600.

I'm way more of a function over form guy, so my dreams involve carbon fiber, stainless steel and Cerakote VSblue steel, wood and engraving.
I hear ya, my .375 H&H covers me for my extremes. 2023 she's headed to Alaska. 2016 went to British Columbia come home and a day doesn't go by that I don't think about going back north. 20161021_152212.jpg

A Linebaugh custom revolver in .475 Linebaugh of course. But I’d settle for a Ruger in 41 Mag or .357 Maximum. My local Cabela’s had a very nice Ruger .357 Maximum. But at $1900 (used) I’m halfway to the custom Linebaugh.
Agreed, still playing with my 454 casull. 335 grain hard casts are hard shooting. Going to try some xtp mags for plinking.

Currently hunting with a stubby little ruger american ranch rifle in .450 bushmaster. Would love to suppress it and put it in a stock that is a little bigger/more LOP.

I've been kicking around the .350 legend in my head. It wouldn't do anything my .450 doesn't on deer, but the lighter flatter shooting cartridge would be a little better suited to coyote and varmint hunting if you can find appropriate loads. A light rifle with a medium weight 20 inch barrel and good glass would be just about the ideal all around rifle for Ohio (excluding small game). Basically trying to make a .243win that is ohio legal:)

The old .375 winchester is straight wall and will get you to 300 yards in Ohio. It's is the sleeper of the straight wall cartridges. I know it's starting over in a rifle or build but it take you all the way. Especially in bolt gun that used to be say a 30-30. Savage 340 bolt would make a nice economical build or the Remington 788 bolt gun that used to be a 30-30. On those two you would get way better ballistics with better bullet choice. However you lose semi auto.

I wish I could find a Casull. I’ve already told the significant other a Ruger or BRF 454 Casull is pretty much on the buy on site list.
I put it off for years. I always liked the freedom arms 83. Picked one up for me and my son's diy moose hunt scheduled for 2023.

You know My local store had a used FA in 454 for several months but even used and dinged and literally what looked like the grips had been chewed on my a mouse they wanted $2000 and I just couldn’t stomach it. Locked up like a Swiss bank vault but I couldn’t swing it.

I definitely feel the money sting. Condition is everything though. I saved a grand at $2600.00 but condition was 98%. My ffl that receives for me said it was unfired. Handling marks only. So I did ok but 2 grand for one drug down a gravel road is ridiculous.

I’ll just bide my time. And BFR is really starting to come on my Radar their custom shop puts out some really cool looking stuff.

My dream gun arrived today.
1886 is here.
40-65 wcf, crisp and tight. Slight shrink on forearm wood.
Slug barrel tomorrow.
Special order, rifle letterable with winchester extra heavy octagon.

C'mon...my custom 308 Norma Mag is my "dream gun for hunting" of course - at least for every species of big game I'm ever going to hunt in this life. I had it built as my retirement gift to myself when I turned 62 (10 years ago), and I paid for it with my first 2 Social Security payments.;)
On the other hand, the thumbnail below is a picture of my wife's retirement gift to herself. It cost 10 to 12 times as much as my custom 308 Norma Mag with scope.:what:

I had a sporterized 03 that was chambered for 308 Norma back in the 80's. My BIL borrowed it for deer season and liked it so well that he made me an offer that I couldn't refuse. Then he couldn't afford the ammo. I sold him the last 4 boxes that I had and the dummy left the brass on the ground. To be honest, I would like to have it back.

I'm starting another "dream gun" now, as a 2nd retirement gift to me. My 1st retirement was from the Army, this one is from .GOV as an Army civilian, I figure in DEC23 I've had enough.

I've got a REM 700 SS ADL in 300WM that I've been modifying over the years. I originally bought it as a back-up and a "loaner" for when my FIL visited from Austria, I was stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA at the time and elk was on the menu.

I've since had the bolt fluted, handle skeletonized, and M16 extractor installed. A few years ago I dropped it in a B&C "Alaskan" stock and converted it to a BDL. I also replaced the original Leupold VX3 4.5-14X40 with a Leupold VX6HD 3-18X50 with B&C Reticle in LTW Talley rings.

Weight all up is a little over 8lbs.

Last month I ordered and received a Bartlein 2B (IAW Bartlein a "medium sporter") .308 5R barrel and ordered a Manners EH3 stock in SEPT. I'm having the barrel cut with a 1/2" shank exposed and at 24" that will make the muzzle slightly under .630". The stock should be here early spring, so I'm dropping the barreled action and new barrel with my smith this month so he can get started. He estimates about 3 months, so the barreled action should be done in time for the stock's arrival. It will again be chambered in 300WM (already have brass, dies etc.) and I'm having the actioned trued and the receiver milled for a bolt stop. Once done, I'm having it done in graphite black Cerakote. The jury's still out on the trigger, but I'm leaning towards a TriggerTech.

Hopefully it will all come together in time for load development this summer as I've got an elk hunt Fall of 23.

It should look close to this, but with elite clear web finish:
