Sounds like an awesome LR rig!
I've modified my dream gun a bit since the OP. Not a LR boomer by any means, more my idea of the "perfect" eastern KS box blind/stand rifle. I've got a Rem M7 barreled action sitting at Pac Nor for re-barreling with a one of their stainless super-match barrels which will be a .260 Rem; 20" 1:8 twist, 3 groove, #3 Lija profile, fluted. The bolt will be spiral fluted and barreled action will be Cerekoted in Gen 2 Graphite Black. I've got a Manners LW stock on order. A new Leupold V3HD 2.5-8x36 CDS arrived a couple months ago and I've already got the Talley LW rings. The Manners LW stock is on order now and with any luck it will all come together in late AUG/early SEP. Should make a light/compact gun for stand use, with the ability to reach out a little ways should the need arise. Going to look similar to this:
This is the primary "hunting battery".....haven't been out west for a few years now, so the Colt Sauer is pretty much parked. Almost all my hunting now is geared to Whitetail.
Browning 12 gauge Liege Superposed for upland game birds.
Colt Sauer (.270) for Antelope-Mulies-Whietails
450 Bushmaster for Whitetail
Knight 50 caliber Black Powder for Deer
Then there is the .35 Remington stuff for brush guns and such, a model 81 or a Marlin 336.
Or maybe a modern gun hunt...
Marlin 1895 .45-70 (hopefully, Ruger will built it RIGHT)
Ruger #1 .30-06 (have always loved the look of the #1, just never had the funds and the opportunity at the same time)
BLR in .260Rem (because I'm strange that way)
Colt New Police 4" .32-20 (cool, old revolver)
Colt Commander (because it is a Colt and a Commander)
Ruger Single Six or Blackhawk .25-20 Colt. (Never happen, no interest by the masses)
Keep going until you get a deer with each of those guns. A 100 gr partition from my .25-06 dropped a NY whitetail like it was hit by lightning last year.
oh and it has to run flawless.
asking not to be sarcastic, but because it is pertinent to my area except we have Douglas Fir. what if you hunt forests and off landings? Sometimes you get a 40 yard shot, sometimes you get 400 yard shots. I'm considering carrying 2 rifles to pick between. Or maybe just one.
25-06 sounds pretty good... or 243.
Carry two rifles??
You mean the one that will kill at 400 yards, won't kill at 40???
Sounds to me like, you need to pick the 25-06 and practice, practice, practice.
I'm carrying a 270 Weatherby now, close range is brutal on Deer.
Use tougher bullets and/or rib shoot them...
I did the same thing waaay back when I had magnumidis, and used a 7mm Rem. mag. for a time..
It's the method I use when faced with varied terrain. My all around deer rifle for years has been a .270 with 130 grain at over 3100 FPS. I just use Nosler ABs and double lung them. When I "know" what a shot will most likely be I get more specialized:
20" .260 Rem
20" .350 Rem
Use a 160 partition at 27-2900 fps you'll be fine.
Ruger Single Six with a quality 4X pistol scope.
A Savage 99 in rare 375 win. Ive got dies and a 250gr cast mold, plus various jacketed bullets, also boxs of factory 250,220,200gr ammo for it. A quick detachment Leupold 1.5-5 in Warn Rings definitely gets accuracy out of it. At 100 yards, 1” 3 shot group is the normal. Plenty for 250 yards if sighted in correctly and using 175 spire points with 1680 powder…. 2500fps. Or closer distance with the 255 Barnes original at about 2000+ fps
My Favorite of all my firearms.
You sir are a man of fine taste.
My Remington 700, 30-06 Earned the title "My dream gun" and many other titles. I hunted with that same gun every season for over 33 years. It never failed not one time. In all those years I never had any reason to even think about replacing it with any other. And, I still don't to this day.
We taught archery in our classes for years and I am a certified NASP instructor.
However, my 62 year old shoulder doesn’t allow me to bow hunt anymore.
I also have a Remington 700 in caliber 30-06, and it is my dream gun as well!
I remember as a boy reading the old field and stream and guns and ammo mags and seeing the 700 advertisements and dreaming about having one.
My second was the Winchester model 94. We grew up on Saturday morning westerns and the 94 was another that I longed for.
I have both but my 700 has some very special meaning to me and is my go to if I can only pick one.
