This is a cool hunting story....

About three months ago a friend called me to ask if I'd take his brother in law out hunting. His Brother in law is from the L.A. area and has a strong interest in guns and shooting but has never had the opportunity to actually hunt.

Last week I was able to fufill a life long dream for Gene the brother in law. He had just three days to hunt.

On day one Tim (My buddy) jumped a nice sow for Gene but he wasn't able to get a shot. A little later I jumped a huge old bruser out of a swamp for Gene but it all happened to fast for him and once again he was unable to get a shot. We didn't see any more hogs on day one.

Day two,

We saw no hogs on day two. We did however cover over a hundred miles in the truck and about 10 on foot. Gene got to see a Coyote stalk a fawn and the mamma fend it off.

Day three,

We put a stalt on a new swamp and saw notthing. While driving to a new area jumped a herd of about 50 hogs with an absoloute toad boar in the lead. Gene was unable to get a shot. He just wasn't confident enough to get with the program and pull the trigger. He was starting to get dejected. Gene decided to take a nap during the heat of the day so I took out another friend of mines 14 year old daughter to go look around some water tanks.

WOULDN"T YOU KNOW IT. yep she shot a hog and I couldn't resist so I ran up a hill with my newest acquistion, a pristine Savage 99E in .308 that I found last month in a pawn shop and laid another porker to rest.

In any case Gene was a little crushed when we got back to the trailer with blood on our hands. He figured it was all over as it was 6:30 PM on the last day of the hunt.

I loaded Gene and tim into the truck and set off somewhat doubtfull myself but motivated to get ole Gene a hog non the less. I started out towards the North west where we had shot the two hogs earlier. I was about 10 miles down the road when I just got this nagging sensation to turn around and drive back towards the south east to an area we hadn't hunted yet.

As it was now nearly 8:00pm and we had about 25 miles to go Tim thought that I had lost my mind but I just trusted my sixth sense and proceeded to the new area.

The first windmill we came to I could clearly see an extremely fresh wallow I had just turned to Gene and told him to get ready when he saw a herd of hogs busting through the brush not 20 yards ahead.

For the first time during the hunt Gene did everything right. he got his gun up loaded and busted a nice sow with his Ruger 7MM. A very clean 50 yard one shot kill. Not bad for a first timer!!!!:D

Needles to say we have another confirmed hunting nut on our hands!! And it's never to late to teach an old dog new tricks. Gene is 65 years old. Congratulations Gene and many good years of hunting my friend.
