I am removing a factory front sight from one Remington 700ML (it is scoped) to put on another 700ML that I want to set up with open sights, but it currently does not have a front sight on it.

Does it matter which way I drift the front sight off? I need to get the sight base off, and I believe the front screw for the base is under the front sight.

Tradition dictates that sights & pins are drifted out left to right.
Drifted in right to left.

But not all modern firearms follow tradition anymore.
Assembly line direction trumps tradition every time!

Look closely at the sight with strong light and a magnifying glass and you might be able to see finish scrapes on the sight on the side that came through the dovetail first.
