drop free cz 75?

So I just bought a standard NIB unfired CZ 75 B sa/da and everything i have read about these including the manual says the magazine SHOULD NOT drop free.. Mine does is this normal? Made me feel silly when I showed it to my cousin and a mag bounced on the floor.. other than that the gun is in perfect working order

Hmm, sounds like the mag brake has been replaced with the CZ-85 brake - sure it isn't an 85?

As armored said, it's the mag brake that controls whether it will drop free on a CZ 75. A lot of people I know consider the drop free magazines an advantage. That said, replacing that piece is easy and only requires the removal of a couple pins. It's very likely that if the gun typically comes with a non-drop free brake but yours drops free, a simple call to CZ support would get them to send you the replacement piece. That said, I'd personally consider it an upgrade

Yeeeaah, that shouldn't happen except in the 85 series and the 75 SA (and possibly in the SP-01 series, I can't remember), but hey, like Bozwell said, it's really an upgrade.....

I believe they changed over to drop free mags in the past year or so when I bought my CZ 75b New it also came with a drop free mag.

All 4 of my CZ pistol's mags drop free. I think CZ changed over that feature for the American market, if I remember correctly.

not unless they forgot to put on the ambi safety well I don't mind either way but the mag catch sounded like a good idea. At least its not heel release..

My older CZ-75 Semi-Compact has a fairly low round count, only about 600 or so rounds, and the mags will almost drop free. If you are holding the gun still they will not, but a little flick of the wrist and they fall right out.

you can get the spring from CZcustom if you wanted to swap it out. not complicated. i prefer a drop free. my stainless 75b(08 importation) had the mag catch, was planning to swap it till i decided to sell it.

The CZ's I've bought recently have always come "upgraded" with the drop free mag brakes so I guess I missed that change. I guess they got sick of all the phone calls, haha. If you prefer to have them hang when you hit the release ballistic, you can install http://czcustom.com/CZ_75-CZ_85-SP01-Original-Mag-Break.aspx very easily. I don't think there's any right answer between drop free/hanging mags and it just comes down to personal preference. That said, it's easy to tweak it either way in almost all CZ's (certain mags are stubborn in the Phantom and no mag brake there).

My P07 mags drop free and that is because everyone says they are not supposed to. I find it better than having it hang up.

Just as part of my gun cleaning and preservation method, I applied the thinnest film of oil inside my magwell, and sure enough my CZ75 Compact converted to drop free magazines!

I have a 75 compact that I bought used that drops free My 85 C is from the factory drop free. My new to me , used 75B (military) is Not drop free. I had a 75 BD that was not drop free..

You can remove the grips, take the top pin holding the mag brake free, and then bend the mag brake so that it bows in the other direction -- pressing against the mainspring (hammer spring) rather than the mag. Reinstalling the pin, replacing the grips, etc., and you should be ready to go.

Removing the mag brake is a bit more involved than just removing two pins, but its relatively easy. In most cases, you don't need to remove the brake to make the adjustment. (There's a little tab on the bottom that complicates removal. I break that off. It still works, and it's a lot easier to disassemble, later.)

Walt Sherrill +1. I followed his instructions quite a while back.

There is a crease that catches the mag an inch or so from the top of the mag brake. You can fold the brake to remove the crease, but sometimes it can start catching mags again. I removed mine and flattened it on an anvil--years ago--still good-to-go.

New mag brake = $10 + $shipping + delivery time, AND you still have to remove the original and install the new one. Duhhh.

I also found that the mag brake metal is quite brittle. If you bend it TOO much near the top or bottom, it will break. So, be gentle. (If it breaks, just remove it, and wait for the new CZ-85 Brake you'll order, to arrive. <grin>)

On my phantom the stock cz mags drop free, but my mec gar 17 round anti-friction mag wont. I think it ight be because of some rough spots in the magwell, but idk.

Just had to go try my CZ 75B SA even though I know the factory mags drop free. Mec Gar ones do as well. Of course, they're loaded, and that extra weight helps. I didn't want to unload them to verify they still drop when empty, but as I recall they do.

The Phantom is "special" in that regard. It does not have a mag brake in it (unlike other CZ's) and certain Mecgars just do not drop freely in it. The stock mags almost always drop freely though and I believe the 16 round Mecgars usually drop freely (mine do, I've heard others though where they won't). To the best of my knowledge, there is no easy fix for getting those 17 round Mecgars to drop freely in the Phantom.

The Phantom is definately drop free, great pistola. My p-01 and my wife's RAMi are drop free, pretty much just the original CZ75 that had the mag brake, made to help soldiers not lose thier hard-to-replace-in-the-field magazines in combat, IIRC.

True. My CZ75B magbrake is actually spring steel. It also won't 'dent' when being aggressive with a mag change.

Unless I'm mistaken, aren't the .40 CZ-75's all drop-free where the 9mm's catch? My .40 has always dropped. Is yours 9mm or .40 OP?

I think it's the newer 75B's that all drop freely. I just picked up a 75B Limited Edition Friday afternoon and the magazines practically launch out of that gun.
