Va. Deputy Shoots Armed Man Outside Jail

A sheriff's deputy in Stafford County shot and wounded a man who had brandished a loaded assault weapon yesterday at the deputy outside the regional jail, authorities said.
The man, apparently upset that his son had been jailed on a charge of driving under the influence, was carrying more than 300 rounds of ammunition in a belt slung around his chest when he arrived outside of the Rappahannock Regional Jail, said Stafford County Sheriff Charles E. Jett.
Authorities identified the gunman as Godfrey L. Williams, 57, of Spotsylvania. He was being treated last night at Inova Fairfax Hospital for one gunshot to the upper body, and he faces charges of attempted capital murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a crime, Jett said.
Jett said his department received a call about 2 p.m. from someone warning that Williams was headed to the jail with an assault rifle.
"The caller said the man was intoxicated, confrontational and extremely irate over his son's recent incarceration at the jail," Jett said.
"The caller was concerned the man was going to harm someone," Jett added.
A half-hour later, Williams drove into the jail's parking lot in a red pickup.
Sheriff's Deputy William Walker tried to stop him, but Williams continued to drive up to the jail's front door, Jett said.
Williams got out of the truck brandishing an AK-74 assault weapon with a bayonet. He then turned toward Walker, who fired twice, striking Williams once, Jett said.
Walker was placed on routine administrative leave pending a review, Jett said.
Attempts to reach someone by phone at the home of Williams were unsuccessful.
