Dry-fire practice without snap caps: Yes or No?

Do I NEED to use snapcaps for dry-fire practice?

I don't dry fire rim fires. My first rifle, a Stevens .22 bolt action, suffered a "peened" chamber due the dry firing my Dad encouraged. Had the chamber reamed back to spec. And it shot great for 10 more years.

The only gun I use snap caps in for the protection of the gun is my SA RF revolver. I do have SC's for my other pistols but they are used for other reasons than protecting the firearm. Mainly drills, but also to use for introducing new folks to the proper handling of firearms.

I've dry fired my CZ 75 over what seems to be 10000 times now (I try to follow the rule of 10 dry fire shots for every live fire shot taken, especially with the cost of ammo over here) and haven't had an issue with it
