We've watched with alarm or, in some cases, amusement as people at the Dem Underground, and elsewhere on the political left, have come unglued in the days since the election. I've heard repeated calls here for any examples of sane liberals who use reason in their writings.

Here's one. I've posted excerpts from this soldier's livejournal before, with her explicit permission. Her user name there is ginmar, and she's granted permission to post this excerpt and link. I found out about her site last April, when she posted about herself and a couple of dozen other soldiers getting out of Kut, just about out of ammo, just before being overrun. In her livejournal entry for November 5th, 2004 entitled About as tactful as I can get, which isn't much , she takes people to task for falling into despair. She writes this not to disparage liberals but to encourage them to "buck up."

{Edited at the request of ginmar to correct a misconception of my own}
So, yeah, not an offical statement or anything. I'm not saying this on behalf of anybody but me. Disclaimer, blah blah blah. I just happen to be a soldier and a liberal. Not my fault that the combination is unusual enough in today's increasingly conservative world to make it a political manifesto or something.

At heart, I still think like a civilian. Haven't gotten out of that habit of speaking my mind at all hours, all times. I don't know where the line is, so I hope I stay on the correct side of it. But I'm sort of disturbed at how depressed people are.

So are you getting mortared? Are flares going up on your perimeter? No?

Dude, not to be sarcastic or anything---but, oh, wait, that's right. Sarcasm is my middle name.

Can I have those unarmed problems of yours?

There. The sarcasm portion of the evening is out of the way.
She fights political battles fairly and she stands her ground. She's busy fighting a war right now, but I know she'd be welcome here at THR. I'm pleased that she's spending her not-copious free time converting the left to normal, adult behavior. She's got a lot of good stuff; it ranges from James Madison quotations, to Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan fiction, to things like:
Everyday acts take on political significance when they challenge long-held biases or prejudices. A black woman refusing to give up her seat on a bus. A black man and a white woman marrying. A woman in the gun turret of a Humvee, protecting her fellow soldiers. You don't need words to make a statement.
That view could have been expressed by many of us here at THR.

As always, an (unnecessary, I expect, for this group) warning not to abuse the privilege of being invited into someone else's electronic living room. Further warning: Harsh Army language. People who get mortared in the service of our country get to swear all they want, as far as I'm concerned. Do I agree with everything she writes? I respect who she is and what she is doing.

More background info: she's had some Net-access difficulties. She has stated in the past that she will personally hurt anyone who complains at her site about their crummy dial-up connection. :evil:

Update:

There's now a running insult-fest going on with an individual with the screen name of "moderndayknight" - I recommend skipping the whole nested set of comments below "maxmatahari" at 2004-11-05 10:43 down to "transilience" at 2004-11-05 11:32:48. Not nice.
