Dumbest move ever, but thought it to be safe.

I keep firearms in my truck, but I make sure its locked, and on the off chance I forgot to lock it, I make sure the guns are still there. I also make sure nothing is visible that could convey any value to anyone, reducing the chance further that someone might break in.

To the casual observer, it could have been pretty obvious you transfered the pistol from one vehicle to another, then left the vehicle unlocked and unattended. To the casual observer who is also a thief, you just left the situation wide open for a payday. I don't buy the story that he wanted to buy it. If that were the case, you'd think he would have approached you when you were around, or your wife who was right there.

2 failures here after reading the thread: yours, for being a bonehead and leaving the gun unattended, and announcing it to anyone within earshot. The other was hours wife's lack of situational awareness. Not only did she miss the presence of the thief, but what if the theft of the gun hadn't been his only intention. She missed the presence of a man with a loaded, stolen firearm.

You've learned your lesson, did she?

You failed to secure your firearm. It was stolen. The thief is just that, a thief. You, sir are irresponsible and want to mitigate your carelessness by braying about putting the gun "in the console"' out of sight. I'm glad you got your pistol back, that you weren't killed with it by the thief, and hope that you will never be a careless <removed> again, allowing a criminal easy access to a firearm. You just don't do that.

From my view, the only important thing is that-as stated before-no kids grabbed it, and that neighbor's felonious theft also resulted in no adults, but especially no children being injured or killed.

I would rather have No handgun (or any sort of gun) than indirectly allow a situation to happen which often results in tragedy.
Even though your handgun presumably is never accessible in your home, let's not forgot about the many needless deaths we will read about this year, made possible by live-in boyfriends (or husbands) who leave a handgun in a home with easy access by kids.

All's well that ends well, Eb1.

Everyone screws up sometimes, and as you pointed out the valuable lesson here is that thieves can be anywhere at any time and that we should never let our guards down. Even if its only for a minute.

I'd say you took the flaming admirably, good job for not letting this one spiral out of control
