I've noticed a lot of my local shops have old S&W model 36 and colt cobra snubbies for sale in the $250 range. Most of these look in decent shape but I would like to buy them and make them look better.

Would using duracoat on them totally kill their value? I think a semi gloss black or the gun blue would look good. Also, would the duracoat fill in some of the engravings like the make and model letters?

Thanks for any opinions

A standard model of a name brand gun so worn as to sell for $250 these days is of no concern as to "killl their value". Fix it up to suit yourself.

I don't know about Duracoat specifically, but there are a lot of painted guns out there with the markings perfectly clear.

There are probably some guidelines about painting a revolver, they have different clearances and tolerances than autos.

I've used Brownell's version of duracoat on semi-autos and it works well. It has a very thin viscosity and the directions tell you "no more than two coats". Used as directed it doesn't obscure lettering and such on the part.

I agree with Jim Watson as far as hurting the value. If I were duracoating a revolver I would mask the bore, chambers, and recoil shield portion of the frame. i would also just leave the ejector rod and star as is.

Unless you're getting a slammin' deal on those revolvers, you won't be hurting the value by refinishing it -- enjoy your guns! ;)

Thanks for the replies guys!

I never really thought they would be collectors or anything, but I just wanted to make sure. I've only bought new guns, and yesterday I picked up my first revolver ( 4" GP100 ), and I'm starting to notice a lot of cool little snubbies with some history that need a little work. It's fun now to search around for used deals and than make them look better.

I've never worried too much about value anyway, I'm the guy who took a sawzall to a brand new Sportster the day I bought it cause things weren't to my liking stock!

Thanks again for the tips on duracoating and the opinions.
