I have become...curious about duracoating ACU pattern on some rifles and accessories. I understand that having it done for a rifle costs about $100, OR buying the basic setup for doing it yourself costs about the same. (I already have an air compressor.)

My dilemma is, I am not at all artistically inclined. My stick figures suck. Doing model planes as a kid, they were always fingerprint-covered catastrophes. I do NOT have a good track record for this kind of event.

My idea is, to get the kit, and start small and slow. Try it on some....expendable pieces of material until I get the hang of it, try some knives, and THEN move on to guns. (Cheap beater guns first.)

Is this a good idea or am I just going to have a lot of sage green blotches on my driveway?

I can at least help with this part - buy a cheap 3mil thickness painters drop-sheet at the hardware store. Pin the corners down with paint cans or bricks. No splotches. No complaints from the wife. $2.29 is worth that.

Better yet, clip a wire coat hanger at the hook so it's one piece, and hang the item you are spraying so you can work on it with a level gun and at comfortable chest/head height instead of bent over and awkward. This will really help your results. Smoother, even spray hand for you, even spray gun/nozzle for consistent feeding - much better deal.

Nah, go for it, especially since you have a compressor. Go slow, follow instructions, take the tips people have for you. I believe Brownell's also has an on-line instructional video on how to get a great spray-on finish on a firearm. Go watch that.

But be SURE you get an in-line dryer/water trap for the air hose - one drop of water out of the compressor and it's back to square one, stripping and re-prepping.

buy a cheap airsoft if you want to practice. with all the choices out there you could get a replica of your firearm and have at it. :D
