Although they claim the DVD stopped the bullet (which I guess it ultimately did) the loss of velocity from passing through one man and the window surely helped.

DVD in Firefighter's Coat Blocks Bullet

WALTERBORO, S.C. — A South Carolina man is thankful for a DVD that ended up taking a bullet for him. Colleton County Fire and Rescue Director Barry McRoy says he was leaving a Waffle House restaurant in Walterboro on Saturday morning when two men ran in fighting over a gun. Police say a bullet hit one of the struggling men, shattered a window and then hit McRoy.

The bullet hit a DVD McRoy was carrying in his pocket. He suffered a bruise but didn't realize he had been shot. As he told a police officer what happened he noticed a bullet hole in his jacket, the shattered DVD case and a piece of the bullet.

"I was saved by a DVD," McRoy says. "How lucky can you get?"

One man was arrested on assault and battery and gun charges.

The DVD was nicked. It was a gift from an employee who had recorded a TV show about fire extinguishers.

I call BS on that. He would have had nothing but a welt on his body even if he was naked, he wasn't "saved" by anything. I routinely shoot old CDs and DVDs in my backyard with my $20 pellet gun - one pellet will cause a DVD to explode, and it will penetrate at least 5 or 6 stacked on top of each other. A real bullet of any caliber wouldn't even notice a DVD in it's way.

I've cracked CDs with a medium powered (300fps at the muzzle) airsoft gun, at a range of about 7 yards, probably less.

Happy for him though. Suppose we should suit up in DVD-anti-armor-piercing-anti-cop-killer-bullet suits?

Now, a stack (50 or so) of CDs/DVDs versus a .223 at 50 yards, heck...not a chance.

Yeah, DVD's aren't that tough, but you're forgetting about the jewel case it was in. That's two more layers of plastic it had to go through. I think it definitely saved him from a nastier bruise. He probably even would have felt it.

Maybe it was an airsoft gun or one of those primer-only .22s.
I have had a computer hard drive stop a 9mm JHP. It was just a lucky spot where it hit, the rest went through.

It went through one person and shattered a window. He just got the remnant of the force. Glad he wasn't hurt but the DVD had very little to do with it.

Aw Geeeeeezz

Here I thought I could make myself full body armor just by going to the dumpster behind the local video store. AW, Durn! :D

You just can't fix stupid!

I get the feeling that the contents were a tad more salacious than 'fire extinguishers'. Anyone else get that notion?
