Hi all.

I posted a few months back showing off a saiga I had just converted to pistol grip. At the time I had to resort to using the factory buttstock since the tapco one I had purchased was to short. I had planned on using a black plastic stock to match the rest of the gun until I found the PSL type stock that came of my wasr22. It turned out to be the same length as the tapco but it has more drop which allows me to comfortably shoulder the gun and get a good sight picture without twisting my head to far. I got the idea to strip it down and dye it black with rit dye. Not completely black but a dark charcoal maybe where I could still see the lines of laminate. I think it would look pretty good. Ive never done this before, is it easy to do? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

My advice would be to forget that it's a gun stock, and just strip and refinish it like you would any other wooden piece, like a book shelf or a table. That's how I'd work it.

Well normally that would be my approach but Im not very good when it comes to this type of thing. I can do basic things like sanding it down and smoothing it out but refinishing something is not my forte.

Strip it, sand it, apply a ebony wiping stain and rub in some tung oil. Tung is great since it can be applied, rubbed in and wiped to get a dull finish or applied in successive coats to get a high shine. Whatever you want.

Try a black leather dye such as Fleibings(sp) then lightly polish with steel wool. Exposed end grain of laminiations will absorb more dye than longitudinal grain . Finish as desired.

If you are going to use rit dye you need the powdered dye and then mix it with rubbing alcohol.

Make a stop at http://www.rimfirecentral.com/ and ask the guys in The Ultimate 10/22 forum how to do it they are always doing it over there.

Many of them guys bought a Ruger Charger then took it home and started to modify it seen one where the guy dyed the stock purple and it looked real good.

You can make stain out of Rit dye and 90% rubbing alcohol. Rite Aid stocks a lot of colors of rit dye. Here is a pic of my M38 that i made the stain for.
