I recently acquired a WASR-10 with the Black Tapco Galil-type handguard and polymer folding stock. Unfortunately, when I ordered it, I had assumed that the rifle would still function with the stock folded. It will fire the cartridge in the chamber, but the charging handle slams into the butt of the rifle. It the stock sat about 3/4" lower when folded the rifle would function just fine. Any thoughts on how to make this happen (short of hacking away at the plastic stock with my Dremel?)

Nope. I wish it was that easy.

You'd be better off replacing the Tapco folder with a Romanian side-folder, or even an ACE skeleton Stock with folding mechanism.

With the Romanian side-folder, you'd be able to use the rifle. With the ACE, you'd be able to decide which side you want it to fold. However, the optics mount rail MAY give you trouble if you put an ACE on it and had it fold to the left.

I say this because I'd read reviews of the Tapco stock that indicates a lack of durability over time or duty.

For me, that probably wouldn't be a huge deal, as the second or so it takes to extend the stock makes the gun WAY more shootable. Folding is for storage, not for shooting; a shoulder weapon with the stock folded is IMHO pretty useless. However, being able to check the chamber or chamber a round with the stock folded would be convenient.

Having said that, you could probably pick up a Romanian sidefolder at a gun show, if being able to fire it folded is important to you. You *might* also be able to shim your existing stock at its attachment point at the rear of the receiver to change the angle enough to clear the charging handle.

Not necessarily. With some practice, I've been able to shoot my AK with the stock folded pretty well(minute of paper plate) up to 50 yards. It's not optimal or course, but if you had to get it into action quick, it's certainly workable. It's basically a heavy, long barreled pistol.

I highly agree with the recommendation to replace the stock with a Romanian or East German folder. It's a tough, easy to install stock that's solid and works well. Prices vary, bargain shop.

I can't think of a way to adjust that.

I'm surprised it won't fire/function correctly with the stock folded--I don't recall that being an issue with the one I had. However, I didn't have it long--as others have said, there's much better options available (imho).
