when shooting, or as part of their "gun enthusiast persona"? It probably goes back to my childhood, when cowboys rode the silver screen in black and white (well, maybe not that far,but we had a B&W TV:)), but I forced myself back in the 70's & 80's (eventually I overcame all the wisecracks, etc, as I lived in Ohio at the time) to make a cowboy hat a frequent part of my leisure and range attire. To me, it speaks of a certain sense of freedom, of the Spirit of the West; just being free. It also keeps the rain off your head and the sun out of your eyes (yes, they are even practical). If you own a quality one, it may even last a lifetime. They are not for everyone, but I believe they are somehow linked to the freedom associated with our country, as are our guns. Anyone else get a kick out of wearing a cowboy hat, outside of the obvious "cowboy shoots/ S.A.S.S., etc?

ive got about 9 of them and its just routine for me...yes im old and yes i grew up on a farm/cattle operation....i prefer to call it a "sky piece"...fashionable yet functional...my head dont get wet and then sun doesnt get in my eyes..

You just live in the wrong part of the country. Nothing at all unusual about them out this way. :D

Don't own any cowboy hats. Primarily a baseball cap man myself when I'm out shooting, or doing just about anything else outdoors.

I'm a hat collector, and I wear some kind of hat every day. Some days when it's particularly sunny, and not too windy I wear my cowboy hat.

I used to where one when we had horses. Then I ended up in the middle of the city again with nothing but a dog and it kind of got phased out, then someone borrowed it and left it in the back seat of a car and it got trampled by my wife's careless sister and her kids:cuss:. I do miss it though, perhaps its time to get another one.

I own about 16 of them, lost track of the count for sure. I rotate wearing three different ones to work each day to cover the bald spot on the back of my head, the rest for SASS shoots.

I've been a hat junkie since my grandpa let me wear his Stetson when I was a toddler.

Baseball caps are for baseball. And maybe golf.

I wear a visor when golfing :p

I pretty much wear a Cowboy Hat all day, everyday.About the only place I DON'T or won't wear one, is at the range. I really don't want some hot brass burning my 10X hat.

Where I'm from you'd look out of place. Of course about 8 months out of the year a guy needs a stocking cap here

I have a $50ish Stetson I wear when riding horses, a beanie I wear on cold days, and a boonie hat for hiking/shooting/other outdoorsy stuff, bareheaded the rest of the time.

I have a leather cowboy hat that I bought at Dollywood some time ago. I wear it quite a bit in the summer, usually every day. In the winter I wear something warmer.

A man and his hats...

As an avid outdoorsman, I try to always wear a hat with an all-around brim, for protection from the sun and rain. I almost always wear such a hat, except in the most severe cold, in which case I wear a hat that incorporates ear protection.

But rather than a "cowboy hat" per se, I tend to favor one variation or another of the "Tilley Hat" (I own quite a few, some from Tilley and some from Ultimate Hats, some in cotton and some in nylon).

Depending on how I configure the brim, it can look like a Fedora, a "boonie" hat, a "safari" hat, or even an "Aussie" hat. I wrote a little piece once (on another firearms site, from which I am now banned, but that's another story) about how I'd used the pocket inside the crown to conceal a little .380 semi-auto (when I had nowhere else to carry it)! That's the type of hat I wear whether in NYC or in Mexico, or points in between. I even wore one in England.

Because I live within an hour's drive of the Stetson Outlet Store (in St. Joseph, MO) I have a small collection of Stetson hats, although I don't wear them too often. As a sartorial purist I don't think it's quite fitting to wear a "cowboy hat" without also wearing "cowboy boots". But I'm very proud of the Stetson "Open Road" (aka "LBJ Model", in "silverbelly" of course!) that I acquired quite a few years ago at the Stetson store for a mere $10!

When I go to the range, I go "one better" than a cowboy hat; I often wear a campaign hat. It's not an el cheapo; the felt is so heavy and stiff that the crown almost functions as a helmet. But I've put a decided bend in the brim, so I like to think I look more like Richard Farnsworth in "The Grey Fox" than like Jack Webb in "The D.I."

But you'll never see me in anything resembling a baseball cap (let alone one worn backwards)!

Cheers, "Ringolevio"

I have about a half dozen. Three are for shooting in CAS matches. One is for dressup at CAS matches, one straw for summer and one pure beaver for winter. I also wear cowboy boots most of the time but if I'm not I don't wear my cowboy hats.

i spend an inordinate amount of time on sportfishing boats...cowby hat not so good...pith helmut..cool breezes......hit the pier...cowboy hat

Being a Texan. A former ranch hand. And a past mounted officer, if I didn't have a good hat, I'd feel kinda undressed! Was brought up on a ranch and never saw a baseball cap until we got a TV and I got to watch a game. Even after I left the mounted unit and went into the detective office I still wore my hat. It is part of me I guess. But I gotta admit, that when at my range out back in the woods, the hearing protectors won't fit under it! :) My family referred to a cowby hat as a "Warbonnet" and being part Lakota that was fine by me! The only time I didn't wear it was when I was in the Army...I had a hard time getting on over that Ranger cover we wore! :) :)

Haven't wore one in a while. I like them but a good Stetson cost to much to get grease on. I wear boots everyday only shoes I own. A ball cap is what tops my head from the time I get up till I get home at night. I feel naked without it. I farm and seed and chemical places keep me supplied. For FREE.
