This evening I took a short cut home- 84 miles of USFS road starting at sunset. This would be just south of the Colorado border in New Mexico. Drove by and waved at a total of six, count 'em, six bull elk- two of them big enough to be 7X. Not all together, although the first three were. Also included in this nature extravaganza was one large Mule buck in the Valle Vidal. All sightings were at less than 100 yards, maybe 200 FEET. All of them stopped dead in their tracks to look at me, except "Hop-a-long" the buck who did just that. Naturally, I had no tag for this game unit and was unarmed- well, a Mini-14 with green tips, but that would be cruel and illegal.

Oh, I stopped to pee and an owl swooped down about twenty feet from me, land and grab a mole like critter and fly off with it. Nice to know I was not in his/her way.

So, how was your Sunday evening?????

Great, but Saturday...

I stood on the deck and watched 3 bald eagles argue with a flock of gulls about fishing rights in the pond. No elk or mules, but beaver, otter, rabbits, white tails, mergansers, mallards, pilate woodpeckers and the occasional copperhead. I do miss the mountains ...

Saturday I was at our house on the lake...saw a blue heron, 'bout a hundred buzzards, crows, and about 20 wild turkey. I always like to see the critters...no matter what walks by!

Mark.

maybe one day I'll get to see elk and mule deer...if I ever get out west.

Saturday I was at a ball game and My buddy got to do a $50,000 kick through the uprights and shanked it.

On the the way home from the game we saw a normal sized 4 point Whitty, (8 pointer for you southern guys). Im more of a 5 and up type otherwise I would have shot it.

Let the dog out yesterday morning and went upstairs to check email. Watched a fork horn black-tail go over the fence, with the dog bringing up the rear -- a huge grin on her face.

Bald eagles in the trees, Roosevelt elk, coyote, cougar, black bear, any shore bird you might name.

No Starbucks. Just like God planned it.

That is awesome, Blacksmoke. I remember the first time I spent a few days in New Mexico, I couldn't believe how much wildlife I saw. It was in the Cimmaron area. I saw tons of deer and turkeys. One day we ran across a hen with a bunch of chicks while hiking. She headed for the bushes, but in the process got separated from some of the chicks. We moved on to the other end of the meadow, but turned around to see what was causing some commotion. A Red tail Hawk was coming in after the chicks. It was pretty impressive to see what happened next, as that mother turkey came flying out of the trees and attacked the hawk mid-air. Changed his mind pretty effectively.

4 years ago we were in a caldera north of Jemez, NM when we saw what we thought were a herd of cattle. I took a look thru my binoculars and they were Elk. Being from the East coast that was a shock. Then further up the road there was one munching away not more then 10 feet from the road. I'd bet it isn't that easy to find them in hunting season though. Or is it???

Here's something from my neck of the woods circa last July.

Blacksmoke, I'm in your part of the country quite a bit, going back and forth between Santa Fe and Denver. When I have the time and the weather permits, there are some "shortcuts" which are MUCH more enjoyable than boring ol' I-25. Happily, the gun laws and pretty permitting in both states as well, although I really don't like your anti-BUG law. I imagine I'll retire somewhere from New Mexico to Montana.

Kindofblued,
That is the ugliest herd of horses ever seen!!!:p

The forest road I traveled is off NM Highway 64 which runs parallel to I-25. It is north of Cimmaron about eight miles. I believe it is called Forest Road 1950 and is on many maps. Worth a side trip.

Sunday I drove out to a friends place to see if I could get a deer...............let me stop here for a second and explain, I don't consider it hunting to just drive out and sit in my truck hoping a deer will come by..............anyways when I pulled up someone was there alread so I just sat in the truck and waited since I needed to get some firewood from where we park.

I watched a stray dog relieve himself on a fire hydrant today... does that count? Ah, the wonders of the New Jersey countryside. :D

The only wildlife I saw this weekend was some venison tenderloin on my buddy's smoker. Yum.
Oh, and the damn tree rat I trapped in my attic.
