EBR's - how many magazines?

As a bare minimum? Take the number of magazines your vest/web gear can hold, add one (for the one in the rifle). So, if your vest holds 8, you'd want a bare minimum of 9 magazines.

A realistsic minimum is twice that number.

But having a number of magazines whose price equals the price of the rifle isn't a bad idea.

anyone know where to get spare 2a1 ishapore mags, and possibly even spare k31 mags?

im sorry i know my schmit and ishy arnt EBR's but i wass hoping i could get a lead.

I have 2 for my AR, that doesn't exist yet :)

I'll probably grab some more sometime.

Stripper clips. That is what they were designed for, not to switch out mags when you emptied it.

IIRC, only 1 K31 mag was made per weapon, so they are sparse.

What if you are so untacticool that you don't have a vest? ;)

Feanaro,

In that case, you can head over to Sportsmans guide, robertrtg.com, or cheaper than dirt and pick up a few G3 double mag holders.

I got mine at sportsmansguide, but if I did it over I would get them at robertrtg.com, just to support him.

Wait. So I need as many mags as I have pouches, plus one in the weapon. But how many pouches do I need? How do I know how many mags I need if I don't know how many pouches I need? :scrutiny: I'll still be trying to figure all this out when the Zombie outbreak hits. Good thing I have you fellows to protect me. :D

(I had actually considered getting some of those pouches. Now if I could find a place with those and a Specter/CQB 3 point sling that doesn't cost $40.)

Then you're not going to be carrying them as some sort of guerilla fighter -- buy as many as you can afford. I'd say 8-10 as a start, more as you can. Not because you need umpteen magazines loaded, but stuff happens, and it's nice to have spares.

I have 6 30 rounders for the AR and the stock neutered 10 rounder that I never shoot. Would like to have at least another 4 but funds are kinda scarce. When the money starts flowing again I'll be looking at at least 20 for the rifle. Spares are always a good thing IMO.

I also bought all 6 of my mags about 4 years before I had the rifle. I knew I was going to get one and ran across a good deal so I jumped on it. Don't really have any plans for a different platform so no need to stock up on non-owned-weapon mags for now.

Get as many as you can, there is no maximum.
Magazines are consumables and in a SHTF scenario, they're going to get lost, broken or left behind
If there is no SHTF then there will be some law restricting their ownership which will make their trade/sale value go up particularly before the ban goes into effect
Those of us here in CA might remember, right before the CA mag ban went into effect, USGI M14 mags were $60 when you could find them and Beta-C mags were running $500+

And we regretted not buying them then even at those prices :banghead:

jeknvk,

i dont intend on switching them out every time, buuuuuuuuuuut i would like to have a spare on hand in case i have one go ooc. and yes i know about stripper clips, throwing a clip away is grounds for a bayoneting (i keed i keed)

further more, i ve read in other publications that haveing a weapon that can use a clip (ie m1a or fal), is a good thing for us guys when we have use em for keeps,

ergo im in the market for a m1a or fal :)

Need? 1 for each gun. :)

I like variety in my magazines, so I have several mags of different capacities for each rifle. Everything from 5 rounders up to Drum Magazines.

For my Polytech M14s, I have 4 20-round mags and 2 30-round mags (which are next to useless).

For my two AK-clones (SAR-1 and NHM-91), I have 2 75-rnd drums, 3 40-rnd, 6 20 rnd, 3 5-rnd, 1 10-rnd, and 27 30-rnd mags, plus 200 rounds on stripper clips.

As for pistols, I have a couple dozen mags for my two high-cap Para's and 8-10 for my C7-45LDA.

I'm all about preparedness but what if you are forced into evacuation? you better be driving one heck of a vehicle to transport all that. And what if you cant drive? youll have to leave it all behind.

Ive got 6 for my AK and 4 mags for each of my auto handguns. The way i see it is that if i cant carry it out its mostly worthless.

As a side note, unless you are wearing Class IV body armor and a helmet, you probably won't be using more than one mag.

Ha, that's funny. And logical. Guess I better start looking into plates for my jackets, and a helmet.

As a side note, if the BG invades our country wearing Class IV body armor and helmet, you're probably going to be using more than one mag...

i have fifteen steel thirty rounders for the AR, but i have a five gallon bucket of twenty rounders that i use the most, ( biggest use of the AR is banging away at prairie dogs.) The local reserve post was changing out the twenty rounders for thirties and a friend just put a few five gallon buckets at the range and taped a sign on it "Leave mags here" At the end of the weekend he had four five gallon buckets of twenty rounders.

I also have at least a dozen mags for each pistol. mainly cuz i hate wasting the time to load the mags at the range. I think i have a couple of dozen chip mccormicks for 45's many Para ord's and CDNN was clearing out used prebans once for S&W so i bought a dozen 6904 and 5904 mags

Never happen, unless they're in vehicles...in which case, it's a moot point, no?

The silver lining of the Cosmetic Ban cloud here in Cali is that SKS strippers are cheap. (6$ for 20.) I have 200 rounds on strippers right now, but I found out that 18 strippers in the pouch are very space efficient.

I have absolutely no way to project what I will need, so I will get what I can.

If I had an legal AR/AK and had to figure what to bug out with, it would probably be 150-200% of what I could carry. The extras will provide for giving magazines springs a rest, and for the eventuality of them breaking. Of course what fits on my body might not be the same as what I can carry, so I would have to go hiking with my chest rig, (Sans ammo if it wasn't PC,) to see what sort of weight I can carry. Then I have to figure what I can BO with for vehicle/bicycle/foot. Additionally what if I bug-in for an extended period? Then the answer is as much as you can store.
