Educate me on the SKS-M

I have an oppurtunity to buy an SKS-M for a pretty good deal. However I know nothing about it. I was in the market for an AK-47 but came across this deal.
I am still debating please give me some advice. I attached the poll to see what everyone else thought.
I will mostly be using this gun as a truck rifle and plinking if this helps.

The Sks is a great rifle, a lil more accurate than the ak. what really sells the sks over the ak for me is the $200 price difference(around my neck of the woods that is).

Norinco SKS-M uses AK magazines and comes with either a thumbhole stock or conventional stock.

IMO, go with an AK.

This is just my opinion, of course.

- The Monte Carlo stocks are awful. The grip is HUGE, the comb is too high to use comfortable with the irons, and mag changes aren't as quick or convenient as they are with the AK.
- I've seen a more rare version with the standard SKS style stock and a 20" barrel. Much better IMHO than the 16" versions, with their shorter sight radius.
- There are 16" versions of the standard SKS w/standard fixed magazine, and some of these don't have the bayonet or lug. Great gun for something to slip behind the seat of a truck. Wish I'd never sold mine.

It's milled, you don't have to worry about sight cant or mag wobble or trigger slap like on a WASR.

Really, it depends on the price. If it's cheaper or equivalent price than a WASR, I'd prefer an SKS-M any day of the week. If you're paying more than a WASR is worth, I'd just get a Yugo instead of the SKS-M.

modified SKSs (i.e. larger box or modified to take detachable clips) are very prone to jamming from what I heard. I've heard claims that they consistently jam multiple times in a single clip/box.

If you want something with high-cap detachable mags, then its better to just get the AK. I dont see much point to fork over for an AK look-alike for an AK price (unless collecting) when you could just buy an AK.

They are. BTDT with my Yugo SKS. But the SKS-M (SKS-D, SKS Sporter) are not modified. They are factory built SKS designed to use AK magzines. Mine is 100% reliable, and I've never heard of any feeding problems with real Norinco SKS-M or SKS-D rifles.

I like shooting my SKS Sporter better than my SAR1 AK. It's more accurate and easier to shoot. However, the AK is much more compact with its Romanian folding stock.

The SKS did require some minor modifications before I was happy with it, but then again so did the AK.

My SKS sporter, modified with Tech Sight's rear aperture, Williams front Firesight, and a $9 fiberglass "Jungle Stock" (painted with Brownell's Alumahyde II), . It has a Hungarian 20 round "Tanker Mag", my AK mag of choice for both rifles.

Here's my SAR1, modified with a Romanian sidefolder, Ironwood PG, FSE trigger group (to fix trigger slap), threaded muzzle, and Gunkoted flat black (to fix the horrible Century finish and electropen markings). It also has one of the Hungarian 20 round "Tanker Mags"
