So it was decided that I would take my two nieces and nephew to the range. I agreed, as long as it was one at a time so they would pay attention, not be goofing off. Today was the first outing, my oldest niece and sister-in-law went with me.
We spent about 4 1/2 hours shooting, I took samples of most common firearms. Bolt action rifles, semiauto rifles, revolver, autoloading pistol, pump shotgun.
SIL was mostly an observer, but she did shoot a little. I think i shot less than a dozen rounds all day, but my niece got a lot of rounds downrange.
Started out on .22 rifles, scoped and open sights. Moved on to .38 revolver, she liked it and shot about a half box of ammo. Didn't care for the .45, it was pretty big for her hands, she's pretty small build.
What got shot the least was the pump shotgun. I had her work it for a few minutes, learning how to operate the pump, how the action release worked versus just working the pump after firing, how to load, etc. Fired a total of two rounds. Even "light" 1 ounce loads are a kick in the pants if you're small framed.
Then we moved down to the 100 yard line and broke out the centerfire rifles. They got to see that the AR isn't some magic death ray, can be accurate and fun to shoot. Niece went through a few boxes of ammo.
I got out a .308 bolt gun with a bipod. That helped her shoot it from the bench and I hung on to the bipod to keep her from getting "scope eye". Only shot a couple rounds, went back to the AR. I had two of those available, one with a 9X scope and one with peep and red dot sight.
BONUS: A few benches down, a fellow was shooting an AR10. I asked niece and SIL if they heard those gunshots. Obviously, yes. Then I told them he was shooting with a silencer. "But... It's not silent..." I explained how Hollywood pretty much goobers everything gun related. Guy with AR10 yells over "EXACTLY!".
Niece says she had a good time, SIL is talking of coming out again and maybe bringing BIL next time with their other daughter.
