Emergency ammo supply

I like to keep a minimum of a 1000 rounds per mainstream cartridges: 9mm., .38 Special, .45 ACP, .223, and 7.62x39. Other rounds, like .38 Super, .380, .44 Special, and .45 Colt, I have plenty off without feeling the need to stock up on during this time. And I have more than enough .22 LR to last quite awhile.

The whole hording thing depends on an individuals perspective and shooting habits.

I don't have a large "emergency" ammo supply for "what ifs", I have a "be prepared" supply so I can keep shooting when the supply chain goes to chit.

Spring through fall I go through some guys idea of a 'stockpile' per month. Between 2 IDPA matches, a 3Gun match, practice and having a range out back, I consume what "average'" shooters would consider a chit-load of ammo. It's not uncommon to have 2-3000 rds of loaded rounds for my match calibers on hand at any given time with the components to load 10s of thousand more. Components turn into ammo rapidly with only a couple hrs. on a blue press. I've also got enough components on hand for my hunting calibers to last several lifetimes for the "average" hunter. Difference between me an him is I have a range out back and practice frequently.

One man's hoard is another's "enough ammo for next season".

The new Federal Domestic Terrorism Investigation Department will soon be contacting several members from this thread for "incitement to hoard ammunition." o_O

Being new to the game, and not being able to find ammo to become proficient with my rifle with
Did I read in thread you started that you recently purchased a 10/22? Is that the rifle you're having difficulty finding ammo for? Are you able to find any at all, or just not an "emergency supply"? Honest question, but how much ammo for that rifle would make you feel more comfortable?

The problem I'm having is that the local ranges aren't selling it. The only way to get it is to use it at their range. I can buy it, but then I have to use it there. A few of my friends have memberships at some of the outdoor gun ranges around us, and have asked me to come with, but I don't have any ammo to go with. And these are private clubs that don't have shops in them. I'd like to have about 1K rounds so I can go to any range I like, anytime. I also have two young shooters (my son and eldest daughter) to account for, ammo wise. Also, the ranges are charging a premium for the ammo. $20 for 50 rounds. Add that to the cost of going to their range with three shooters, and suddenly, I'm spending $100-$150 per range session. Can't afford that. There is range which is about 45 minutes away that I'm considering joining. Their ammo is cheaper, and when they have it, they sell it for personal use. It's also the place we go to practice Archery, so for $500 a year, I can get a membership for their indoor and outdoor archery ranges and indoor pistol and rifle ranges for the family.

I guess that it depends on your emergency.
I have twice been in a situation where all of the bridges that connected us to town were washed out and not replaced for three months or more.
Hunting and fishing got REAL important for a while.
It was fun to ride a horse across the ford to get to school once the water went down, though... .

Food, water, generator, fuel for generator I get 100%. Are you using that primer to do anything?
I use the primer to make a round. I feel if one owns a gun, they have an obligation to keep in practice and know how to use it. I shoot at the range at least once a month and go through over 200 rounds each trip. And did I mention, I'm one less person adding to the demand for ammo during the ammo shortage. So I am helping by cutting my demand when it's the highest. I really don't need a generator or fuel either, I've gone without power for two weeks before after a hurricane. But having one sure makes it more convenient . Just like have supplies to reload makes it more convenient now, and helpful to others who really need the ammo during a shortage.

Thank you kindly. Likely going to move away from NJ once my kids are out of the public school system here. 7 more years. Maybe sooner if Murphy is re-elected as Governor.

What is happening there is unfortunate. My work takes me to the NWS Earle region pretty regularly, and I have found the people to be very polite, courteous and hard working- 180 deg from the NJ stereotype. They definitely don't deserve the government elected for them by Newark, Camden and the NYC western metroplex.

500 rounds for home defense
Good Lord, how bad is the neighborhood you live in?! :D
What makes you think he's going to use all 500 in a single situation? A single day/week/month?;)

The reason you keep a supply of ammunition is partly preparation for times of scarcity, but because you may never see ammo on a store shelf again. TEOTWAWKI/Zombie Apolcolypse/Nuclear ice age are a concern............but more likely is your city/state/federal government decideing to heavily tax ammunition purchases.

Its a rare thing to hear of someone complain of too much ammo.

It is indeed. Our state government is so corrupt it's unbelievable. They continually scream that there is no money, but continually increase our taxes. And now with Marijuana being legalized for recreational use, we should see a huge increase in State revenue. Which will all go into our Governor's pocket. Yet, they get re-elected time and time again.

We don't care about the politics of NJ, so let that go.

There's 22 LR on line. Now I don't know if you can ship directly to yourself in NJ or through an FFL. So you pay a fee. Around here an ammo shipment to an FFL costs you an extra FFL. However, some dealers will ship to you. Ask them.

"...leave in original package still sealed..."
Absolutely concur.

Also makes it a breeze to identify at a glance to differentiate practice stuff from premium stuff.
You can also put boxes of ammo in plastic bag with name enclosed to loan to friends if they are in need.
Should the need not arise and they find their own source to buy...it makes returning it easy.

Just my opinion, emergency planning is not a bad idea, and shouldn't be considered fringe or nutsy now.

Lotsa folks keep bringing up zombies etc, as a bit of humor. Funny, but irrelevant. Same thing regarding political woes.

But actual emergencies- depending on where you live, hurricanes and such are very real things. Remove partisan politics from the equation, and you still get the following- the US is not firing on all cylinders right now, things are very stretched, we don't have a lot of reserve left in the tank. People are not living with the same personal freedoms we were all used to, and thus are irritable about stuff... masks are mandatory, there were 3k people in the 70k capacity Superdome for an NFL playoff game, etc etc.

If a natural disaster would occur, things are very likely not going to be nice. Look at Louisiana last year with the hurricanes, you had fretting about covid-spacing combined with providing shelter to people who lost their homes.

Remember Katrina hitting South La a decade ago, it was a disaster area for awhile. There were police and first responders coming in from all over the country, as far away as Michigan... because the rest of the country was OK. The whole country is a bit messed up right now, there won't be a national response like that right now. You're possibly going to be on your own for awhile.

What's the worst disaster that could happen to your area in the next year? Are you ready for that, and a worst-case type of response? If not, you'd be well-served to address that, just in case.

Never really stocked up for emergencies, figure if it were to come down to that I have enough to keep me alive until I'm dead....:D. I would just buy ammo when I came across a good deal just to have on hand for range time. So any emergency ammo I have is just a by product of me not getting to the range as much as I would have liked to shoot it.

If I have to live in a world where I use up my emergency supplies in gun fights, well - that's not a place I want to be in. I'd better stock up on the leather pants with no backside and grow a purple mohawk.

Are we done with this? I'm tempted to close if nothing new.

Just wanted to toss in here to use a couple of pipes to ensure boxes are not directly on the ground if stored in a basement. Stout shelving is even better. I also keep a dehumidifier to ensure humidity level is reasonable.

Maybe try an air rifle. 22 cal pellets can be bought at $.04/pellet. It is a whole different world to get into, but can save you money in the long term.
