Got a problem with a rifle. It's an EMF Hartford model in 45 colt. I was working my way up in loads for hunting and started having powder getting blown back through the action into my face. These loads were nowhere near max pressure. I did notice all the cases have soot all the way up the case making a black stripe. Does this mean there is an imperfection in the chamber? What can I do?

There is probably nothing wrong with the rifle...just the brass isn't sealing in the chamber because of the low pressure as you work up your load.

Happens all the time and most Colt owners are familiar with it. Try bumping up the load and, when you get it hot enough, the case will expand and seal the gasses.

Some rifles/pistols have larger chambers than others and will need a higher pressure to obturate the case. Keep at it, you'll get it working fine.

I've used factory loads and the same problem is there. What powder would you recomend to get the case to expand. I'm using Win. 296 right now.

I'd try something like win. 231 or unique. 296 is intended for heavy or magnum type loads.

The bullets I'm hunting with are 250 gr. hornady XTPs, hense the 296. My concern in this is that the blow-back is in the same place every time. I'll try to get pictures.

Because of the location of the extractor on the M-92, it will push the cartridge to the bottom of the chamber. So, if it doesn't seal well, it would be no surprise that the blowby would tend to be along one side.

I agree that 296 is NOT the best powder for this round. Especially in less than max loads. It will not burn efficiently and is probably contributing to your getting hit with particles during firing. Faster burning powder will combust MUCH better, build pressure quicker and, even if it leaks a little, will have little powder grains left to blow back at you.

Unique is probably the all-around best powder for the Colt....amoungst smokeless fans. The Holy Black is what it was invented to use and it works great. But, I understand you wanting to use smokeless for hunting...just in case you need a follow-up shot!

The Lyman 47th shows 9.3 Unique for 1100fps out of a rifle with 250grn jacketed projo. That should just about do any animal you would care to hunt with the rifle. Good luck.

I just looked at EMF's website. It shows the Hartford as a single action revolver. Any chance you had a typo? I'm having a hard time seeing how a rifle would blow powder particles back at you. If it's the revolver, try 8.5 grs of Unique. This works very well in my Ruger.

Hartford is an EMF line of firearms that includes rifles as well as revolvers Go back to the site and look at rifles, and I believe you'll find some labled "Hartford," (but I'll admit I didn't go look). :uhoh: ;)
