Emp whats the hype

If the EMP were priced more in the $600-750 range, I'd seriously consider it. What I like about the design:

• It's smaller overall in dimension than a similar 9mm 1911 "officer" model from someone like Kimber
• It retains all the basic essential 1911 attributes - thumb safety, single-action -only, single stack magazine, thin profile, etc.
• It's got the Springfield name on it, so you know it's well made and will most likely hold it's value, plus they do the 1911 pretty well, IMO
• With ultra-thin grip panels on it, I think it would be a great IWB CCW that is a perfect compromise between comfort (it's thin and relatively light), accuracy (single-action-only, 1911 trigger), firepower (9+1 capacity), and effective caliber (9mm, 9mm+P)

Too bad it's so dang expensive!

Looked at them side by side at the shot show with the micro's could not see no big difference for the money but thats me.

The hype is about its supposed reliability.

Other small 1911's are just full sized guns with the barrel and/or grip shortened, and this subsequently causes jamming issues. I have a micro, and its been a jam-o-matic until recently when I have done much work to fix it.

The goal with the EMP was to build it from the ground up and change the specifications of as many as 15 different parts (rather than just shortening the barrel and grip). The hope was that building it from the ground up would finally provide the market with a good reliable small 1911. From what I hear, as long as you don't buy an early production EMP, it is very reliable (comment to be taken with a grain of salt)??

the possibility of feeding problems goes up as the barrel lenght falls below 4.25" in a 1911. it only makes it worst when you try running a shorter and higher pressure cartridge in it...like the 9mm. a 1911 platform is limited as to the size it can be reduced to by the location of the slide stop pin. that's why a reliable 9mm can be made smaller on a S&W platorm than the 1911.

the EMP is literally a 1911 shrunken around the 9mm round. you do have to be pretty familar with the 1911 platform to see the difference as the EMP is proportionally identical. the magazines don't need to be shotened and the distance the bullet has to travel to enter the chamber is consistent to the original design....which leads to greater reliability.

the build quality of the EMP is similar to the 1911 Professional...it is a high end custom production piece...it's price reflect this. two guns that are comparable to the EMP are the ASP (a cutdown S&W M39 made originally for the CID) and the Nova (a cutdown Star BKM)

think of the EMP as a short action 1911, while the .45 is a long action.

that said, the only problem that i've had with my EMP was too much tension on the Extractor, but that was an easy fix.
the build quality is equal (maybe better) than my TRP, and alot better than any of the Loaded's that i have had.

Didn't sa make a pistol for the G A P 45.or was it modifed to work .

when you take that into consideration, the price of the EMP really isn't out of line.

it's more like a HK P-7 than a Glock 19

I have a Springfield EMP 9mm that I carry every day for CCW and as a backup to my duty weapon (Sig P220). I absolutely love it. VERY impressed with the quality and functioning of it. I've never really had any problems with it EXCEPT when it was brand new, hollow points (Federal)would "catch" on the top of the ramp as it went into battery, but would still load. Quick buff of this little rim with a Dremel tool and it's worked flawlessly ever since. The tolerances are very tight, and it's a little tack driver. I've written other reviews here on THR so do a seach.

PM if any other questions!

The fit and finish are indeed excellent overall. Mine runs like a Swiss watch. If you want a carry 9, it is up there with the best of them.

I don't see the point of a 4" barreled EMP, but that is just me. I would definitely go with a 3" 1911 in .45 over a 4" 9MM EMP.

I have an EMP with about 500 rounds through it, and I think I am finally beginning to understand it. There is a definite break-in of a couple of hundred rounds, and I had several failures to feed during that time. It definitely likes to be run "Wet," with lube. Since the first few hundred rounds it has been reliable, except for some cheap reloaded ammo I bought which it didn't want to feed. I've had a failure to feed so severe the gunsmith at the range had to get thing apart to clear. In short, in my opinion this is a high maintenance gun built to tight tolerances. Treated in this manner it is a sweet-shooting, easy to grip, light, slim, elegant, pistol.

...and some folks like load 6 rounds in an original SAA too. knowing how dependent the 1911 platform is on the timing of it's cycle, why would you consider pushing the envelope of reliability by going shorter in slide/barrel lenght than 4.25" ?

the advantage of the 4" barrel is that the higher pressure of the 9mm...as opposed to the .45... makes better use of the longer tube. that's one of the reasons i like the HK P7 in a compact 9mm...it has a 4" barrel

I understand the shorter 1911's are not reliable argument, and it has merit, but when one that is right, it's right.

I "push the envelope of reliability" because my 3" Kimber CDP has never failed from round one. No hiccup, no nothing. It just feeds, fires, and ejects every HP, TrFP, & SWC I put in it. Golden Sabers, XTP's, Gold Dots, Berrys HP's, Berrys SWC's, Ranier SWC's, X-Treme TrFP's, Precision SWC's, it just eats them all. :)

I don't argue your preference of the 4" 9MM tube over the 3" .45. Your choice. The more I think about it, a 4" tube on the EMP would not be a factor in concealment, and would give a little edge in velocity, but I would still choose the 3" (or 4 / 4 1/4" .45). I have both. I carried a L/W Commander quite a bit for a long time.

Hype= It's small, it's light, it's got one of the smallest grips around. It's reliable, especially compared to 3" .45 1911s. It's full of features. The MSRP on the EMP and the micro compact are only different by 6 bucks, so they're pretty much the same.
They're the same weight, and have the same features. It's just that the EMP has the smaller grip circumference. Personally, I don't really care for the smaller grip. But the thing grips make it an extremely concealable pistol. It comes with 3 mags, one of which I had modified to sit flush with the frame of the gun.
What attracted me to it was that it was 9mm, and was designed specifically for 9mm and .40.

The kimber Ultra Aegis is another good choice, and now it actually comes with a commander style hammer instead of that bobbed crap. The Kimber comes with 1 mag, but you'd probably buy your own after market anyway. If I had to choose between them today, i'd get the Kimber, because its got front strap checkering and takes standard sized 1911 mags.

OH well, guess i'm stuck with this:

Your money is better spent on a ParaOrdinance PDA or Carry 9 with the LDA trigger. That way you get it carry bevelled from the factory at least.

It may be superficial, but to me it's a matter of aesthetics - the 3" just doesn't look right and I think a 4" version would be just about perfect. There are also arguments to be made with regard to sight radius, velocity loss and reliability.

i'll admit that's my reasoning too...it just looks more balanced
