Encounter with AZ HP

The majority of cops ARE good guys/gals

The first time I got pulled over after I got my CHL, the Deputy's response when I handed her my DL and CHL was; "COOL!" A few years back I got pulled over by a small town cop and advised him that I had a firearm in the seat-back pocket on the passenger's seat. He went around and pulled out my Colt 1911 with the black, laminated wood, finger position grips and immediatly said; "WOW! Where'd you get these grips?" A friend of mine was broken down on the side of the road when an NMSP Officer stopped to see if he was OK. My friend was open carrying a 1911. The cop was not phased in the least and turned out to be a real "gun person". They talked guns while waiting for a tow truck, and the Officer even showed my friend his full-auto Uzi SMG.

...As long as everybody can see it (even in your car) you are OK to carry openly almost everywhere....
If memory serves, in Arizona, your car is considered private property just like your home. IOW, you can carry concealed without a CCW.

Related...the console in my Silverado is equipped with my Browning HP.

You find that most cops west of the rockies are easy going. Occasionally you'll have a run in with one but it is rare.
Last I heard, California was still west of the Rockies. Do wish to rethink this statement?

No. What you can do, is carry it in an item of luggage, or a "holster, case or scabbard designed for the carrying of a firearm". This means on you, under the seat in a gun rug, in the glovebox in a cheap nylon IWB, but NOT under the seat, inside the center console without a holster/case/scabbard. Our cops are pretty cool, (last time I got pulled over, they checked my DL, CCW permit and insurance - never asked to SEE the gun, much less disarm me. Pima County Sheriffs Officers), but don't play too fast and loose. if you want AZ actual law, look here.http://www.azleg.state.az.us/ArizonaRevisedStatutes.asp

Thanks for the clarification.

I have a photo of what I've done with my console, and posted it previously here...http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=82961 [Note to self: Find time to learn all this posting, HTML, linking stuff. It will come in handy.] What I did was to glue (I used 'Goop'--man, that stuff works great) a piece of velcro inside the console on the drivers side. I bought a cheapy nylon holster which had a velcro attachment for an adjustable thumbbreak. I tossed the thumbbreak, and velcro'd the holster into the console. I love my BHP, but being a SA, I'm not comfortable carrying it daily, so it's perfect to leave in the truck. While the console is certainly not as secure as a safe, it is accessible, and I do lock the console when I leave the truck (and of course, lock and alarm the truck). It works for me, and apparantly with your clarification, I'm not fudging with the law. Thanks.

Oh. And no comments on my choice in music. :neener: :D :neener:

AZ Rocks!

I'm in Tucson helping my mother out. I actually live in the communist state of Illinois. You can imagine my suprise today as I am in a gun shop, a guy buys an AK-47 and walks out of the shop without encasing it.I have to admit I was just a bit nervous going through the gunshops today (drooling over the guns) and seeing all these people armed and walking around. It was great! I'd move here in a moment if I could pry my wife away from her family. But her roots run deep. I guess I'll just have to keep working with TakeBackIllinois, The NRA (of which I am a life member), concealed carry inc. and others to get things changed in Illinois. (I heard those hoots of laughter). All of you in AZ. Keep on top of your elected officials. Don't lose what you have. It is wonderfull. Johnnybgood

Been thinking about AZ for a while. Make good money but can't comfortably afford a house here in San Diego.

I gotta get my resume updated and start job huntin' in AZ. CCW & open carry, good gun laws in general, great motorcycling roads, affordable housing, no DLs or benefits to illegals and cops who respect the 2A. The tradeoff is hiding inside from the heat 4-5 months a year. It'll gimme lots of time to reload and surf THR!

I lived in Phoenix for a year, while going to school (UTI, for anyone interested), and the heat isn't that bad, once you get used to it.

Now Dhubai, UAE, in June, that's bad. 125 in the shade, yuk.

Nothing against Az., but New Mexico's a good place too. Mild winters, low humidity in summer, open carry, no restrictions on what kind of guns you can own, class 3, destructive devices etc (with proper Fed paperwork of course).

Other states and cities work to close ranges - Pima County, (Tucson is county seat), just opened a brand new public range south of the city, and still has the small but nice Tucson Mountain Park public range, too, where my wife and I like to go.
AZ has great firearm laws, and a few that make zero sense...CCW permit allows carry of "weapon", meaning anything legal, including legal Class 3, but NOT nunchucks....go figure.....
Come down, and counteract these dadgum CaliLieberals moving in, and trying to Californicate the place.....

A letter needs to be written. If you want to encourage reasonable behavior, make it rewarding for those officers to conduct themselves accordingly. The point is not lost on their command structure either.

I would send a copy to any legislator that has a hand in the agencies budget process.

I've never had a 'negative' encounter with DPS or Phoenix PD, unless you count speeding tickets. :(

Maricopa County Sheriff's Deputies on the other hand... :fire:

Kansas sucks. Not old enough to carry, but I would still like CCW laws.

Thankfully im moving to Tennessee in a few weeks! :)

If AZ had more trees and cooler temperatures, I would move there tomorrow!
I live at 7000 ft in the largest stand of Pondersosa Pine in the world, and the local ski area has over a 100 inch base! Just about perfect weather!

I find the Sonora desert to be the greenest desert around (after living in the Great basin with only cresote, and sage)
