Engraving, how to books, etc?

The hand engraving aspect of this hobby is starting to interest me. Being an "artist" at many hobbies, I'm thinking of looking into it. Now I'm not talking about this new fangled laser engraving. I'm talking about old school hammer and chisel type. Anyone know of any sources of videos or books where one could be self taught at this art? Source of tools?

Suggest you get the print catalog, it is easier to browse than the www and you will see a lot of stuff you didn't realize you needed.

You might check with technical video rentals. I remember seeing some rather in depth engraving courses on DVD there. I'm interested in getting into engraving and stock carving myself. Good luck to you!

You know, even now and then, I need a good bee-atch slap in the face I've probably looked thur that catalog a hundered times or more and never paid any attention to engraving tools. Now I get to look even more! WooHoo!

Just to whet your appetite a bit more, the NRA Summer Gunsmithing classes often include an engraving class. Typical classes last from 2 days to 2 weeks, depending on the particular subject. They are offered at a number of schools around the country, although a specific class may only be offered at one school. They are well-worth the cost, being taught by recognized experts in their fields.

I have not taken the engraving class, but I have not yet had a dud in any of the others.
