Well, I'd take a CZ 452 action, have a good smith mate a custom 16" threaded barrel, with a 1 in 9" or 1 in 10" twist, fabricate a folding stock from an aftermarket 10/22 folding stock and the existing CZ stock, add a suppressor and day/night scope, and you have a 60 gr SSS ammo sniping mo-sheen.

Good topic.

I've been using Li-ion batteries for years with no explosions, you just have to know what you are doing. And yes I have the AA size version. More info than you can shake a stick at on candlepowerforums.com. I'll never use alkalines in a light again.

First off, show me a 1.5v single cell Lithium Ion or Lithium Ion Polymer AA battery. They don't exist. Li-Ion and LiPo batteries are 3.7v cells. BTW, these are 2 different types of batteries.

Second, try charging either of these batteries offgrid from an unstable power source, such as solar. Li-Ion batteries are reasonably stable, but LiPo batteries have a nasty reputation of bursting into flames, when abusively charged.

Alkalines have their uses, but in a TEOTWAKI situation, Lead Acid Batteries are your friend.

Wrong, here is a Li-Ion AA form factor (3.7V).

Here is a flashlight that uses them:

And last, even with the most rudimentary electronics education you can safely charge a Li-Ion cell with a solar panel and a charger. All you need is a few capacitors and a voltage regulator. I've been charging Li-Ion batteries for years without any flames.

Dr. Tad,

Ruger 10-22 reciever, in a 1st generation stock from RB Precision, Aluminium BBL from Tactical Solutions, grip pod, ATI butt stock, and an NCstar reflex sight. Pretty fun with some 25 round mags and cheap to shoot.

EOTWAWKI .22LR rifle
I am looking for a .22 LR seup. The idea would be if TSHTF it would be used to walk the country roads at night to shoot varmit for food.

It would need to be folding to fit in a backpack.

It would need a short barrel (16".)

Would be possible to mount a light and a laser.

Best to be in stainless.

Is such a rifle possible to obtain/put together?

The other option would be a 8" -10" .22 LR pistol. Any thoughts on this ?

Have your doctor review your medications.

Please look up the difference between Lithium Ion, and Lithium Ion Polymer. Then ask an electrician about the difference between 1.5 volts and 3.7 volts. Then go to your average store and see how many electrical devices run on 3.7v AA factor form batteries.

Thats enough from me.

Dang, how much is one of those colt ar type .22's? That looks like i could put one to good use, but it's probably more than i'll spend.

If anyone is truly serious about surviving an EOTWAWKI situation, the best scenario would be to make friends with someone who lives well out of town where you can join him and raise a few rabbits and chickens. And if you have kids, you'll also need two or three goats, no pun intended. Next, buy a few small animal traps. And if you are near water, learn how to run a trot line. And you'll need to have the wherewithal to plant a garden.

No offense intended but walking along the road hoping to bag a bunny won't cut it. If you don't believe me, try it now while game is still plentiful and see how much game you could have taken had you needed to do so. And remember that every step you take burns calories. You HAVE to replace them.

Forget the Tac-cool gadgets if you serious about a survival gun it should be KISS – (keep it simple stupid).

First choice would be tube feed in a rifle next would be a revolver and last choice would be anything that needs a magazine.

what about a Remington 552 Speed Master? Its a Semi-auto 22lr that can shoot longs and shorts as well WITHOUT any adjustments.

Its not folding, and its not tacticool, but it does meet the most important requirement of being able to cycle anything. Its the only semi-auto i know of that will do so.

As for a pistol, 8" is far too much BBL length. Try more like 6" These three are the only options youv got without spending a TON of cash:
Ruger MKIII standard 6"
S&W 617 4"
Buckmark Standard Stainless

Edited to add: Winchester also made a semi-auto that can shoot all 3 kinds of .22 rimfire as well, but its out of production and the model number escapes me.

Luckily I live far out enough to raise rabbits and goats, I just don't have land to hunt. The roads here are littered with road kill. I don't think one would have to walk far to find food.

I have said over and over, you need to exercise your survival plan. If you plan to live off the land, go out and try that for a week. If you plan to walk to the National Forest, carrying your gunsafe and Dillon 550B progressive loader, try it on your next vacation before committing to it for real.;)

My own plan is well-tested. The wife and I have been through several week-long power outages in mid-winter and ice storms that made the county road undrivable (for those without chains) for a week at a time, and so on. Each time, we find things we wish we had stashed away, and new techniques.

Hello gents,
I like the idea of a practiced plan. I also like KISS. The easier and less parts the better. A handy break apart bolt action would be nice, otherwise I'd go with the Marlin papoose or the Ar7. I'd only recommend something like this for a grab and go bag setup or in the rug, on which is slung a shotgun. AR/AK in hand .357 revolver/1911 on my side.
Walking the roads at night in a rural area EOTWAWKI? This isn't the 30's. Its a nice romantic idea that a huge stock market crash & no I don't mean 700 points will send us into a bad situation that a proven generation prevailed from. How many of our current generations now are "proven" huh? I think this nostalgic idea is for those who would like to sleep a little warmer in their beds erroneously believing "i'll be ok if it all goes down the drain, I'll just get my trophy elk/buck or rabbits & squirrels when I need to." Let me ask you something. How many of the creatures above shoot back, hunted you and just might be interested in what you have on your person?
Or the oil spigot running dry will change things. As soon as mass production grinds to a halt, the fat ladie's sung. No more Walmart or Safeway to run to.
How do you think generations of people with the "i'm entitled" attitude and those who have carelessly addicted themselves to everything modern are going to react? They're going to show their teeth and claws.
Your survival will most likely depend on your location. Is where you live surrounded by insurmountable natural barriers? How long do you think you'll have before the barbarian hordes from the closest largely populated areas will descend upon you? Unless you live on the moon, your game rich and sparsely populated area will draw them like speculators during a gold rush.
The people your likely to encounter assuming you even have the advantage of living somewhere rural aren't going to be Emo easy pickings that dropped in the immediate aftermath.
Unless your hoping an interesting astronomy lesson will grant you mercy from the clutches of hungry and desperate men, I hope in this case you'd have enough common sense to carry more than a takedown .22 rifle with lasers and lights stowed away in a backpack and capable of volleys beyond 100 yards. Because if not, heaven help ya friend.
