Equipment failure in Wal-Mart???? (Strange)

A short time ago I bought a WIDE stiff leather belt at a local police supply company. As fellow TFLers suggested, it did a GREAT job of keeping my holster put.

Last week I went to Wal-Mart to do some routine shopping. I considered unbuckling my belt and putting on my belt holster but was lazy and decided to use my paddle holster.

Anyway, as I was walking through the store.. my belt simply broke in two! My pants shifted down and my gun (actually my holster) came into view outside my jacket! :what:

The scary thing is... IF I had been wearing my belt holster I believe that the holster would have likely slid off the now broken belt and hit the floor! :what: :what: :what: :what:

This belt was not worn that much and in all my life I have NEVER had a belt break! I was just standing and walking along - no stress on the belt! Is there something I need to be doing to these wide, thick belts to prevent this or was I just unlucky? - Glad I was wearing a paddle at the time!!!!!!!!!!
 
It's that cheap leather made from Chinese cows. Good thing your pants didn't drop and let Mr. Happy flop out. :p

If they HAD, at least I was wearing "tactical underwear"! :) - Don't ask! ;)
 
I Had smae thing hapen to a supposed good Gun belt luckly as you i had a paddle holster on..

Sent it back to manuf it was only 4 months old they replaced it and said that they saw a defect in it and were sorry ...

I still dont trust the new one 100 percent wear it when im not reall going iany where like to visit a freind and wear a paddle holster instead.
 
I don't think that'll happen to a good double-thickness gun belt. Sometimes you do get what you pay for, I'd invest in one if I were you! Either that or we'll call you Mr. Floppy! :D
 
I admit that I really didn't think much about the belt. I DO know that it was wide, very thick, and very stiff. It was almost funny the first time I put it on because it was actually pretty stiff to bend around me and put on.

It DID seen to have a "crease" where it was "hooked". That is where it broke. I bought it at a police supply place and assummed (I know :banghead: ) that it would be quality and last forever.

Seriously, what should I look for in a belt so that it is rigid enough to work as a good gun belt and yet not break in two!???

I am afraid I might get arrested for accidentally brandishing. - and if I am wearing a gun maybe additional charges! :eek:

- I AM serious about the question though. Any suggestions about how to tell if it is a good belt or suggestions about a brand or source for them? What is a "Double-thickness" gun belt???

I have not seen another belt that worked nearly as well (as long as it was in one piece)!

Poor you! A double thickness belt is like an ordinary belt that has a strip of velcro sewn down the outside length onto which a second "belt" attaches via velcro. The idea being that you pull loose the velcro, slide on you holster,then re attach the outer belt in such a fashion as to trap the holster onto the belt. The end result is that you have this really thick belt that doesn't allow your holster to slide around. Although you might find that the belt loops on your average jeans won't let you lace it through. Most of the people I've seen wearing them were either wearing the belt over their pants (kind of funny looking) or they were wearing Royal Robbins that had much larger belt loops.
 
My RR pants have 1.5" loops while my jeans are 1.75", FYI. Seriously, get a RafterS belt for $70 and you're probably set for life.
 
given this one a bit of thought....a "crease" by itself wouldnt do it...a crease and a belt that has been "refinsished" with to much acrylic would do it...

That or at the crease, it allowed moisture in there and the holster rotted from the inside out...This also comes from a lack of good polish before it is sealed...

Granted I dont make belts much anymore, so the above and below is my opinion only...

I hate double thickness belts...I really do...IMO they are "overkill" for 75% of the people that use them...

Last double that I did, the guy wanted one with a steel liner...Told him total cost would be around $60-$80...Dude said "I could go to Wal-mart and get one for $20"......GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate double thickness belts! :banghead:

Belt stuff...A good single thickness belt will run ya 30%-50% of the total cost of a good belt holster..depends on who makes it

a double thickness belt will run ya 50%-70% of the total cost of a good belt holster...depends on who makes it

A steel lined double thick gun belt will cost ya $20.00 at Wal-mart! :neener:

Logistar, you're in KY, worse they can do is ask you to leave the store, we DO have open carry here.

I bought a G and G fashion gun belt or dress gun belt from the local cop shot in 3 months the polymer liner cracked and the leather tore thru at the buckled hole. now it sits at the copshop waiting for the the rep to replace it so i can get my money back

I was kinda joking there Mrstang01. Actually, I know I SHOULD not have been in any legal trouble but the thought of my gun sliding across the floor really concerns me.

(Actually, a while back I had trouble retrieving my wallet and ended up accidentally "hanging" my sweatshirt OVER my OWB holster and gun completely exposing them. I didn't notice this at first but I KNOW the cashier did and the people in line behind me did also. Actually it was no big deal other than they made eye contact with it... had a SLIGHTLY "funny look" and then went on about their business.)

I am not saying that I EVER carry in a prohibited place ;) but should I have "forgotten" and been in a "prohibited" area that would not have been good!

- The ironic thing is that I am not 100% comfortable with the paddle - thinking that it COULD get loose and fall. I always assumed that a holster anchored to the belt was NOT going anywhere.

I guess I should start wearing a BUB. (Back Up Belt)! :p
