I think the estimate was 290 million guns in the United States, almost one per resident. A good share are in the hands of residents like me that has multiples. At the moment I have 8 but as I get into shooting different aspects call for different guns so I can easily see the number doubling. easily.

How many "black guns", LEGAL as of now military style semi automatics, are out here? It seems to me the AR15 and clones are far and away the favorites and most plentiful. America's gun after all. Second place would go to AK47 clones. 3rd FALs and family. The rest would be first gen semis like m1,m14,garands,sks in a small or sizable minority?

Just curious, really trying to gauge how big of a minority owners of such weapons are. IMO America seems to be pretty notorious for taking away such things unless the sub group has numbers or clout. If they wanted my saigas then I would howl loud but one voice doesn't count. many do.

FUDS beware. If they get the black guns your "sporting" isn't far behind. I like my shotgun and marlin lever too but they are not any more innocent in some eyes.

That's a tough number to guage since the patents have expired. With so many manufacturers out there spitting out ARs and AR parts like mad, it's tough to tell. But I'm willing to bet the percentage of EBRs is climbing radically among the blued and wood in america's gun safes.

I'm seeing ARs, AKs, and SKSs at the range every single trip now. Old guys are shooting them. Young guys are shooting them. Women are shooting them. Kids are shooting them. They're really going mainstream. And I, for one, am damned happy about it.

I like that tag "Rocinante"

I'm a big Stienbeck fan. Have you read "Travels with Charley"?

Or did it come from the original?

i got it from the original Don Quoxite. The crazy coot got a broken down cart horse to be his knightly stallion and named it rocinante which means a hack no more or was a nag or something to that effect. I started using it on the mustang boards because my year model was not the fastest but I improved it till it was not a nag. at least to me. you have to look out for us aging eccentrics.

I do love Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wraith and Cannery Row and also a book about the Sea of Cortez that its name escapes me. I am not familiar with Travels with Charley. Good eye Sgt. most people don't catch that.

If I had to guess offhand, I'd say the order is probably closer to:

AR-15
AK
SKS
M1A
FAL
G3

I have to admit, I misunderstood the title of this thread.

My first thought was "Estimated Black gun population" meant "How many african americans own guns".

:)

You could get that info from the BATFE. If they don't give it, a freedom of information act request would probably work.

Every AR or AR lower made in this country is reported to the BATFE. All imports are too.

You could probably get a pretty accurate number somewhere to the nearest 5,000 depending on how many years you want to go back.

The only variable will be those who make their own receivers like AK's or even AR's. But I'd guess they are less than 1/10 of 1% if that. The tricky part is which ones went to law enforcement and which ones to the civilian market.
