Here is a loaded question. I am looking at buying a Leupold scope I saw today. It is the European 30mm in 3-9x50. I looked thru it and was impressed. Very clear glass and nice field of view. Not a bad price either. Anyone have any expierence with this type of leupold scope. I have been looking at the vxII 3-9x40 but this one has more bang for the buck. It is going on a Remington 700 sps in .270 cal. and used for deer hunting.

I bought an IOR Valdada scope. I think it's superior to the Leupolds dollar for dollar. Bear in mind they aren't lightweight.

Hey there! Apologies, I have no direct experience with that particular Leupold but I have long experience with European optics. Their primary drawback is mounting height. A 50mm objective forces at least a 5mm higher line of sight as compared to the usual, American 40s. A Ruger rifle I bought in Germany, equipped with a 50mm scope, also has a stock with a "hogsback" profile to give me a proper cheek weld. You might have to add a strap-on pad or change your stock to make the 50mm "feel" right. I believe you'll enjoy that Leupold. 50mm optics tend to be very "bright" compared to the usual stuff -- helpful during early/late/cloudy opportunities. Good hunting!

Thanks for the info. this gives me some thinking to do and make up my mind. The good news there is no rush to buy the scope since money is tight in the summertime. I won't be able to buy any scope until the wintertime. Oh well I guess I'll get that rifle ready for next years hunting season.

I would consider the 2-7x33mm for deer rather than the 50mm. But then I would also even more so prefer a fixed 1.5x or 2x...maybe 4x depending on terrain.

I have a loopy 3-9X50 Euro 30 mounted on my SAKO 85 338 Federal. Super scope. My go to rifle for elk.
