I'm a self-confessed brass rat. When I go to the range, I take as much as I can safely get without disturbing anyone.

I have a .357 Mag revolver, and it's not as easy to find .357 Mag brass as I would like. So, I started saving .38 Special cases just in case I couldn't find brass for the Magnum.

Once I had a good stash of .357 Mag cases built up, I considered getting rid of the .38 Special brass. I usually never considered .38 revolvers because a .357 was usually the same size and about the same price, I figured, why bother?

Then I found a great deal on a .38 Colt Army Special. It was a beat-up, well-carried old piece, and the only reason I looked twice was the price was low, and I realized, hey, I got a gallon of .38 Special cases at home and I already load a 158-SWC for the Magnum....hmm...

Well, I liked it so much I now have a decent collection of .38 Special revolvers, and discovered the joys of Smith & Wesson Model 10 .38's because of this. I never would have considered buying anything in .38 Special had I not had a bucket of brass for it.

Anybody else have a story like this?

evan,

My story pretty much parallels yours.
I have a Blackhawk .357/9mm convertable and I also scrounge brass from my range to reload. Either not a lot of .357 is shot there or they also save their brass for reloading because I rarely find even one spent case. But there is tons of .38, and being the scrounge that I am, I pick it up figuring that I could use it in the .357, tho I rarely do. My son has a .38 but doesn't shoot it enough to justify the buckets of brass I have picked up.

Due to a recient event in my life, I had been considering getting a concealed carry permit and the BH was not going to work for that.
So...I was in my local toy store "just looking" for something more suitable and wound up with an ex-PD S&W 64-2 .38.

Funny how one thing leads to another, but now I have a carry piece that I can use all that brass for.

Regards, Hud

bought a glock 17 in 9mm instead of the new 40 S&W versions years ago because I had tons of 9mm brass I picked up from the local range....while the 9 is good, I think I should have gone with the 40........:D

Yep. Bought a .40 carbine because of all the .40 brass I've picked up, gonna get a 9mm carbine for the grandson, I've got a ton of 9mm brass too. Ain't buying no .357 Sig though, somebody can have all that stuff. Saving the .38's and .357's though, ya never know.....

Not a handgun, but I once bought a Marlin 336 in .219 Zipper because I had bought a large lot of reloading equipment from an old gentleman who had quit reloading, and in it was dies, brass, and bullets for several old cartridges, the largest quantity being the .219 stuff.

No. Being 24, and not even close to well-off much less rich, every single gun purchase I have ever made has been after months of deliberations and rationalizations. Once I had a quality CCW weapon, and a quality HD long gun, it's pretty hard to justify dropping hundreds of dollars on what amounts to a cool toy.

That's something you don't see every day; cool.

I have a bunch of .280 rem brass. I *think* I can resist the urge to buy a .280 rifle, by using the brass for .270 and .30-06, after re-sizing/trimming.

I'll pick up nearly any non rimfire brass I find, whether I need it or not. I found a bunch of 7mm Rem. Mag. cases, offered 'em for free, and sent them to a guy in Alaska. I also saved up a bunch of .38 Supers I scrounged, and mailed them to another guy that could use them. Just freebies. Good karma, ya know. Helps to keep good deals coming my way.

My son-in-law had a bunch of M16 mags from the military and I had a Ruger "all weather" bolt in .223------so I had plenty of ammo for the mags, but needed an AR15......That's when the EBR fever got me!!!!
UJ

I have a friend who wound up going in the "joint" leaving a tool box full of ammo. Well, noticing all the .38sp he had and I'm sure he wouldn't mind me....anyway, picked up a Model 10 at the next gun show...Probably not the smartest thing I've done, but the pistol is still in the family....

No, but I bought a gun because I had a set of grips. I picked up a set of Pachmayrs (Presentation) and needed a gun to go with them. I didn't think they looked good on a blued gun (no contrast) and this was before stainless.

So I bought a nickeled Smith and Wesson model 27-2 with 8 3/8 inch barrel. I think maybe it was in a wooden presentation case.

I never could "bond" with the gun, though, and sold it.

I have bought a rifle or two because I had bayonets but no rifle to fit them.

Come to think of it, I DO have a set of full-size 1911 Lasergrips that need a home.....my four FS 1911's have their own grips that "belong" on them, the LG's would ruin their look. Perhaps I need another pistol.....

Oh, and my Compact has Lasergrips on it, yet I have a really nice set of wood grips that need a home too. Hmmmm.....

Oh, yes.

Been there, done that, more than once. It'll happen again, I'm sure, especially if the military switches to another caliber and dumps billions of milsurp ammo on the market. If .357 Sig starts piling up as "free range brass" (*not to be confused with free range chicken) I'll at least wind up getting a conversion barrel for my Glock 35.

This pretty much tends to happen to me with military stuff, but I have about enough 30-30 brass at this point to go there, too.

Funny, most of us that reload do it at least partly out of economy, or that's what we tell ourselves, but buying new firearms to deal with free brass kinda blows a whole in the economics.

Yes, count me in, I'm just one more brass rat.

Found brass is God's way of telling you he wants you to buy another gun.

I found .22 Hornet brass and I knew God wanted me to have a .22 Hornet. I found .45 Colt brass and I knew God wanted me to have a .45 Colt. I found 9mm brass and I knew the Devil is a deceiver.:neener:

Just eat more ramen. It's what I do.

I am definitely a brass rat. I usually pick up everything I can get, not just the .45 that I have shot, figuring I might as well get everything and maybe trade it for more .45 or something.

I now have several thousand 9mm casings that I don't think I will trade away! Looking to get myself a nice 9mm for Christmas now!

Either the XDM 9 or the CZ SP-01
