My Ballistics Gel Test: Uh-oh...?

I know it's not the same bullet, but I've gotten wonderful expansion out of 147gr xtp bullets at around 1000 fps.

How large was your gelatin block? Did you fire all these bullets into the same block? If so, each wound tract will disturb the gelatin and you want to keep the other bullet tracts some distance from the others. If the first few bullets expanded and the others didn't, it could be because the gelatin was overly stressed and didn't provide enough resistance to push the hollow points open.

the face of the block was probably 12"x12". i was mindful not to put the bullets through the same track, but i understand the whole stressing thing. regardless, the semi-jacketed hollow points worked much better in the same test.

this really wasnt meant to be a scientific test. i created ballistics gellatin, and fired into it with a snubnose with different bullets.

I've also had some difficulty with my handloads getting XTPs to open up. Found I had to push them really fast.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that standard manufactured ammo may ne on the light side of opening them up.
