I didn’t even know of that site! Thanks!
It's a good one. Not all inclusive, but many of the realtors in rural areas subscribe to it to post their listings. That's the site I found my MN property on. The search parameters are very helpful to narrow your search to affordable acreage in a specific geographic area. Some realtors in MN have figured out how to link their listings to the county GIS programs, so you can see neighboring ownership, land use, taxes, and satellite imagery all on one click. You have a lot of tools available before you even put boots in the woods or call a realtor for a visit.

I think this is similar to the GIS programs we have in MN, but I'm low on data so I'm not going to download. https://gis.ny.gov/gateway/mg/napp_download.htm

Included the entire post just so “we” all know I am not a “dishonorable liar”. Nothing I quoted was something you didn’t write.

I try not to lie at all, much less dishonorably, then again, is there another way to lie? I also pointed out that the exemption, in my State, counts for not only agricultural but timber land as well. The statues don’t even say how old the trees have to be.

In any case since you called me a liar, post your sentence, complete, that you think I am misinformed, or outright lied about.

Are you for farmers receiving exemptions allowed to them as written in law or do you think it’s “BS” for them to get them? If they could receive them but didn’t include them in their taxes, what name would you call them?

You know exactly what the full sentence was: "Now as far as exemptions go, it is kind of BS that farmers get lower taxes but if you try to grow timber you pay more (in NY at least)." The second half of the sentence changes the meaning, as you knew and that's why you cut the sentence short. The ellipsis is a favorite tool of people who are trying to mislead. As I have already written, I think everyone should take whatever exemptions or tax reductions they are allowed under law. I stand by what I wrote earlier. You either have much below average reading comprehension skills or you were trying to intentionally misrepresent what I wrote. In my book, intentional misrepresentation is lying. I will not respond further because none of this helps the OP. You strike me as the kind of smug know-it-all that has to have the last word, so have at it.

I still hope to be able to one day, but it will be a ways down the road given expenses and things coming up.
I am very fortunate that my best friend of over 20 years lives a mile down the road and inherited 40 acres of farmland and woodland. He lets me hunt it however I want. He's a gun guy and shooter but has no interest in hunting, which works out great for me. The farmers that tend the fields usually plant soybeans or sweet potatoes, and the woodlands are mostly older growth with oaks and there are a few wild grapevines. I've seen some nice deer there over the years. It backs up to about 35 acres of mostly fields that his cousin owns, and she doesn't mind me hunting it either.
So while I'd love to own my own land at some point. I know that I'm extremely lucky to have access to what I do.

Can ya’ll just drop it?

I bought my land 26 years ago and the annual CRP payments cover the tax bill. Now that I'm nearing retirement (I hope!) i'm looking to sell it and buy a small parcel on a lake or river. I'll be fishing for more years than I will be hunting.

Even if you are paying a penny in property tax, the land is not truly yours.

might not “truly” be mine as you say, but i can still do what i want and build what i want in said land. I am clearing for a food plot. I did not have to ask permission. I would rather pay some cheap land taxes for that freedom
