Ever take out your carry gun, only to realize it wasnt in the condition you thought?

I carry my makarov hammer down, safety off.. DA first pull..

I unholstered it at home the other day because I was going to clean the mags, and I realized the damn safety was on! :eek: The safety doubles as a decocker, and I mustve forget to take the safety off after I decocked it.
 
I forgot to load mine once :)

God as my witness--I arrived home, end of the day, attempt to unload my pistol--nothing falls out??? I thought the magazine was stuck--as I flip the pistol grip up to extract the magazine--no mag! Oh to be certain, I had a round in the chamber. Nothing like carrying a single-shot 1911. :rolleyes:

I carried my security six empty one day
at the gunshop.I didn't realize it
until i got home and tried to unload it
and found it empty.
 
When I was a rookie cop I worked an off duty security gig at a liqour store that had been getting hold ups. I had been there a couple of hours when I had to use the bathroom. rmoved my gun belt and pulled the pistol out of the holster when I noticed my S&W 681 seemed a bit light. sure enough there were no rounds in it. fortunately I had two speed loaders and loaded it from one of them.
 
That's why I leave my carry gun(s) loaded except when I'm working on it (them).

The other guns are in varying conditions, but my go to's are always ready to go.
 
I carry only DAO guns and the only time it was not in the condition I throught it was in was I did not have one in the pipe! Otherwise no!
 
I dont unload it when I get home, I only unload it to clean. The reason this happened was because I was at the range, loaded it up, put one in the chamber, used the safety to decock it, and forgot to take the safety off before I holstered it.

I'd like a G19 for carry, as the gun that I shoot most often is a G34, but its not in the budget right now.
 
Possible mistakes like that is one of the factors I considered when I was shopping for a carry gun. Realizing your gun is in a condition other than what you thought when you start to clean it is one thing. Realizing this after you needed it to go 'bang' is something else.

Another one of the reasons I chose to carry a Glock.
 
This is an example of why I don't like pistols with manual safeties. I'm not trying to start the safety vs. decocker debate -- this is just my opinion.

I'm a creature of habit and routine...if my routine gets disturbed then I end up goofing something up. If I have a routine for loading and holstering my pistol and that gets disrupted, then there's a chance I could make a mistake putting my gun into readiness. The safety would be the thing I'd be most likely to get wrong. It's also the thing ( in my opinion) that's most likely to get changed (on or off) during normal wear.

My primary carry is a DAO SP101. I figured my daily carry should be as simple to operate as possible. My gun goes in the nightstand at night, loaded, and back on my hip in the morning. I just pop open the cylinder to verify all is good, then in the holster it goes.

Yikes! Wonder if the mag fell out somewhere? I'd be rather worried since it appears you loaded the gun...

No. Even though my wife and I both carry Glocks daily, we are very serious about practicing what we preach. We teach people to do status checks on their weapon every time they touch them that is not during defensive training...i.e. administratively? When we take it out of the holster at night, we do it as if we were presenting the weapon in a defensive situation...explosively. This helps to maintain muscle memory. Then we do a status check by checking the chamber and the magazine to ensure that we KNOW what the status of our weapon is. In the morning, the first thing we do is a status check so that we KNOW, beyond any shadow of a doubt, what the status of our weapon is. Anytime that the weapon is removed from the holster during the day, for any reason other than range training, we do a status check.
 
Yep. I had a friend who, on more than one occassion, unloaded my Glock 23 because he didn't think it was safe. My friend bought a Glock 22 at my urging, so he was familiar with the gun. He preferred to carry his without a round in the chamber. He was a Glock owner and shooter so I didn't mind leaving my holstered Glock around him unattended; I thought he was responsible enough to watch my gun. One day, I came back from the bathroom to find him unloading my gun! I really got on him, and he confessed that he had unloaded my gun before. We are still friends, and I'll still leave my gun in his care...but I overtly do a press check and give him a dirty stare afterwards to remind him of his insolence.
 
I went for a walk one night and when I got home I realized that the spare mag was for a 1911.Gun was a Makarov.......
 
Yes, about 4 weeks ago. I "switched out" my SA XD 9mm to my G29. I put a loaded mag in the G29 and didn't chamber a round right then, I was just concentrating on an appointment I had later that day. I didn't realize it till I got home after a full day of ccw while shopping/errands with my wife.

Now for the embarassing part-- we had seen a shoplifter get arrested and her "helper guy" had ran out of the store right in front of us. We were both nervous because the "helper guy" seemed strung out. We didn't like the fact of being in the parking lot not knowing where the other shoplifter was. At the time I was glad I had my G29 on me. Needless to say when I realized the condition of the G29 when I got home, my heart stopped. Now I double check to make sure I have a chambered round before I leave the safe where my pistols are kept.

I know I habitually would have gone to the "rack the slide " drill on a FTF if I had to use the G29, but what if I didn't have the time or the room/free hand to "rack the slide", that is what scared me.

Desertscout must be my shadow. We have the same ritual. Except I unload my G23 at night and reload with fangible rounds for home security. Then reload every morning with Ranger Talon's for daily protection.

I emphasize RITUAL. Pratice, pratice, pratice. You should never NOT know the readiness of your weapon.

I carry a Seecamp. There is only one way to carry it. The K.I.S.S. system works for me. Now, if only I liked Glocks...
 
I've come home a few times and noticed my 1911 thumb safety disengaged. I'm sure I bumped it on something.

Just once I came home and noticed the mag was released. It was still in the gun but wasn't completely seated. I guarantee you it would have separated itself from the gun on the first shot. Luckily, I didn't need it.

It has changed my routine though. Before I leave the house for the first time, I chamber check, remove the mag and verify it's loaded and re-seat. I'll be damned if Murphy will catch me again.
