Ever used rifled tubes in your SxS?

I've got a decent SxS lined up for my next purchase and was wondering if it would do any good with rifled choke tubes.

This gun would be a general purpose hunting weapon, for upland game, small game, and probably deer too.

Basically I want to know if it is going to be worth getting the tubes for larger critters, or if I should just stick to old style fosters in a SxS.

Thanks.

Try what you would use now and see how you like the accuracy. Rifled chokes are not for upland, strictly for the sabot slugs. If you do not like the current results, a few tubes aren't that expensive

Correct.

I want to know If anyone has tried sabots / brenneke slugs with rifled tubes in their SxS.

They make "spreader" loads that would do better for grouse.

As to the slugs - it isn't any different than any other shotgun- those that use slugs for hunting will tell you the rifled chokes are for sabot, the standard chokes for the basic slugs - doesn't matter if it is a SxS, O/U, pump or auto

Sorry everyone, I am apparently not communicating well today.

I already know what chokes are used for what. This is not my first shotgun, and I am not asking about chokes.

Rephrased: Can I expect a decent a SxS to shoot sabots as well as a pump or auto when using rifled choke tubes?

I read an article in Outdoor Life a few years ago that tested the effect of a rifled tube on various slugs.

If I'm remembering correctly, the tube improved accuracy on foster style and plumbata slugs, but would not stabilize sabots.

I'm intrigued by the idea of a double barrel slug gun. I have a concept in my mind for an o/u with a top barrel that is rifled and a bottom barrel smooth. Maybe if I ever find myself with an excess amount of cash, I'll have something like it custom built.

Thank you.

I as well would love to have a double barrel slug gun, but the only two I know of are the Ugartechea 'Jabali' ($1,500) and the Connecticut Shotgun 'Professional' ($4,000)

The Ugy is a choked smooth bore with rifle sights, and the Connecticut has fully rifled barrels, 1/4 rib express sights, and a scope mount.

I will probably be sticking to Brenneke style slugs, but would still like to hear from anyone with experience in this area. :)

I bought a Browning Invector Paradox tube to try in an FN Police pump. I used BRI and Remington sabots. My Sweet Sixteen with its IC barrel and common slugs out performed it at 50 yds.

This is the closest to your desired experience I can offer

No experience with rifled tubes, but I have shot slugs in various doubles. It's rare to have the barrels group slugs together, oft the barrels will group well separately, though.

I have an old Williams slug sleeve, its about 6" long with shallow rifling, and clamps on the barrel, it recommends use with foster type slugs, I have never used it though.

Its my understanding that double guns, SxS or O/U, are made so that patterns are regulated to both hit in the same place at 30 yards. How that would effect slugs? I don't know, maybe it wouldnt. Maybe they would cross at 30 and start to spread beyond that. Its an intresting question, also wide patterns with rifling, they say thats why rat shot is so limited in 22 rifles, I would think it would do the same with shotguns. But it might give a very limited range use, like nothing beats it, between 2 yards and 12 yards. Sure be worth experimenting with. Variations in twist and centrifugal effect on spread at all ranges. Hmmmm....

Unless you’re planning to add a sighting system I’d go with smooth choke and Brenneke
