How many of you have ever been in a situation where you felt things could go south and you realized you were way underloaded? Mine was in East LA a long time ago. Was not familiar with the city, looked at a map and told my bro to drive "that way " to get to the freeway. Pretty soon it got real run down and we made a turn, only to find a huge crowd of people sort of aimlessly hanging out in the street, blocking the way. There was a real bad "vibe". We skeedaddled out of there but I felt real undergunned with a single stack 9mm and one extra mag.

Ammo ? Blocking the way? You had a car , that makes a formidable weapon !!!

Almost a carbon copy for me, only in Detroit. Wrong turn, ghetto-like neighborhood, no way I'm stopping to ask directions from what is hanging out on the streets giving me the stink-eye. And me with 8 rounds of .45 ACP and no spare mag!

I try to never get into those situations, but yes, once.

I pretty much always wish I had more ammo on me.

Regardless of how much ammo I have on me.

pretty much always wish i had more. doubt i'll ever need any more. 13 rounds of 180gr .40 efmj in the gun 20 round reload of same and ten in the bug of same, 180 rounds of 50gr hp and a rifle in my truck. if my paranoia ever turned out to be right, i think i got a decent chance of fighting my way to my rifle with my handgun and fighting my way home to thousands of rounds and piles of extra mags with the rifle in the truck. when i carried just seven rounds of .45 it occurred to me i might someday need more. since then i have gradually increased my load out. now, i don't think i could carry anymore without seriously compromising my concealability.

When I carry my .357 I have 18 rounds. When I carry my .45 I have 31. It's the cop's job to get into running gun battles with the bad guys, it's my job to protect myself and then run away like a little girl if given the chance.

While the plan is to use none, and the hope is that I'll only need one...I don't feel under-ammo'd.

Unless, as many have said, I'm off to the range.

+1 pauli and others

I've never packed, so I can't really say for SD.

But when I'm down to my last 30 rounds or so, I look mournfully at what's left, and wish that like the horn of plenty, my ammo cans would magically refill while I sleep.

Re More Ammo

I normally carry a Browning Hi-Power, and two extra magazines, I really never hope that I have to employ it for self defense. If confronted I still hope that I can beat most people in a one-hundred yard dash. Fear is a great motivater. My basic plan is avoidance, stay away from rough areas. But if a situation arises in which I have to extradite myself from a bad situation or rescue a friend from civil unrest I believe a handgun is inadequate. Then it's time to dig in the closet and pull out armor, smoke and politically incorrect devices. Hopefully that can't happen here in the Great US of A, (but just look at France).

Big reason I prefer autos to revolvers is that quick and easy reload.

It was not having only five rounds of .357 that bothered me, but the reload I would have had to make while engaging multiple targets that really concerned me.

At least carloads of gang-bangers do not pull up next to me at stoplights and make like they are going to exit their car and attack me very often...

And, no, you can not carry too much ammo.:D

Always, except,

when on fire, or trying to swim, or climb a rope...
I used to carry eight in my 1911 with one 7-round reload.
Now it's 6 in the .357 and one speedloader and one 2x2x2 amoo carrier. 18 rounds. (in the winter I carry heavy magnums, Buffalo Bore 180gn)
I have only worried about it once, when I broke down very far from the right place in a very bad neighborhood. I don't have a cell phone, and I had to walk about eight miles through the ghetto. I got a lot of very scary looks, and a few catcalls, and wondered if 15 rounds would get me home. I think it would, because they don't know how many I have, and I can always reload the empty mag into the gun if someone's looking and I'm out.

i plan on carrying a 1911 with a 7+1 in the gun, and about 6-7 10-rounder reloads. this would be accomplished my carrying in a shoulder holster, with them stacked slanted-like, on top of each other, instead of side by side.
like:
// // // //
instead of
= = = =
each "//" or "=" is a end-view of a mag.

so that's about 70 rounds of .45ACP GoldDot, Black Talon, etc...

then a BUG, perhaps a Glock, uh, 26 i think. 10+1 9mm, and 2 reloads - 31 rounds of 9mm GoldDot, Corbon, etc...

definately enough. hopefully i'd have hauled ass out of there or gotten a longgun/reloads from my car, laws permitting.

I'm shocked! You all carry LIGHT!

I carry, what most consider, a HUGE quantity of ammo. The fact of where one is located is half the story. The other half is how long does it take for the police to respond? All of this aside, research, according to our CCW instructor, (WHO IS THE COUNTY’s S.W.A.T. COMMANDER) swears that the average shoot-out is about 2 to 3 rounds fired before someone's dead or disengaged. However, I think many of us fear the prolonged engagement. By the way, in spite of the statistics, he encourages us to carry MORE than one gun, both same make and caliber with interchangeable mags, i.e. both 1911s or both 9MM Glocks, etc. Regarding how much ammo. to carry he states, "...as much as you can carry." Even with a magnanimous amount of ammo I carry loaded in mags, I frequently will still have an additional 100 rounds in boxes. Better safe than sorry.

the Kzinti lesson.

outstanding! i love larry niven and, of course, all of the man-kzin wars books.

i re-read the story about the angel's pencil every few years and it always brings a smile to my face.

After Katrina, a lot more ammo and firearms. I live in Fl and I went 7 days without power(After Wilma)thinking I need a lot more ammo and a lot more firearms. I had all the hurricane stuff squared away sincw June. So before Wilma I bought all walmarts 3 in. OO and their last 2 boxes of .40. Now I'm going to spend all winter buying guns and ammo.

Well, when my buddies and I go out shooting, there's two formerly banned weapons, and a couple thousand rounds of 7.62x39mm. So yes, I always feel undergunned.

similar thread

There had been another thread; I do not remember if it was in this forum however, something like "How much ammo is recommended."

The military standard for handguns had been 50 rounds; circa 1968.
Now, you're not in a war, however, experience is a valuable teacher.

I will recieve all kinds of criticism for this, but my carry weapon is a single action revolver! Oh, I have used semiautomatic weapons and even automatic ones, but for various reasons, find one shot at each sighting adequate.

Yes, I read the comment about the value of making quick reloads, and do understand it's necessity.

Fourtyeight rounds for me.

I usually carry a P7M13 and one spare mag. That gives me 27 rounds. I think that is a reasonable number.

On the flip side, when would you complain that you had too much ammo?

Perhaps if you were being dragged underwater from the weight... :uhoh:
