Why does UV light deteriorate the polymer?

I'm no chemist, so if anyone could give me a brief chemistry lesson as to why UV light will do this to polymer that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance..

I'm not sure, but I don't think a year or two in iraq is going to be enough time to do it.

I think it takes years and years and years for plastic like that to degrade in light, and honestly the way guns are concealed i doubt anyones going to have a problem with their glock..

UV and + light has high energy photons, which energy can and will break those polymer chains (for example, a big tractor tire could be accounted as a single molecule, a single chain) into monomers, thus reducing the properties A LOT. For example, plastic gets more brittle (it doesn't have that kind of integral strength any more), or gets soft since the monomer pieces allow for more movement than polymer chains. So it's prone to break or deform.

Since no one seems to beat the lifetime test, how many rounds can this thing go without a single TOUCH of cleaning, not even whiping that sucka down.
I know someone who did 4000 rounds that way with a Glock 17 without a problem.

And as to the grip crumbling, H&K made the VP70 as the first plastic grip gun in 1970 an I haven't heard of a grip crumbling. Glock also makes spades and knives using plastic for longer than they make their gun, these don't crumble either.

BTW, has anybody ever seen a plastic gun part made by a quality manufacturer crumble?

why yes, i bought a glock 7 just the other day, and soon as i got home and took it out of its box it crumbled apart in my hands like dry playdoh. last time ill ever buy a glock.

Hrm... Dunno who sold you that glock 7 but I think you got ripped off :( HAHA

Brentn:

I did a 3,000-round no-clean torture test of a Glock 17. It never failed in any way. It's posted somewhere around THR.

Just put through another 200 rounds today.. which almost puts my G23 at the 11,000 mark and not one failure. Of course I clean it religiously like anything else. hehe

Last time I was at the Fed academy in GA (around a year ago) one of the firearms instructors had a glock that had 120,000 rounds down the tube with a log book recording the round counts. The springs were all replaced on schedule and it was on its third barrel, but the slide and frame were the factory originals. It was a little loose, but nothing that would scare you when you shook it. I would guess it has close to 175k or 200k through it by now if its still working.

It was the ceramic! That stuff will crumble every time!

it probably wasn't one of the German ceramic guns... they are very exotic and rare... it was probably some kind of chinese copy...

I honestly think that prihana45 was kidding :D

hm, i dunno. the chinese have been copying glocks for centuries...

HAHAHAHAHA LOL HAHAHAHAHAHA We definitely need humor in these forums it does get a little stuffy once in a while..

the weak glocks I owned only lasted as long as it took for me to sell them!
G19 and G17... while they did hit where they were suppose to.. they wouldnt feed half the ammo I fed them....

someone once said Glocks are combat tupperware.........
tupperware is right!
Theres a reaon that SF in combat reach for a Sig if it available..lol

My father and I have come pretty close to wearing out a 1st year G23. We keep logs of the rnds fired for all of our weapons. Right around 32K with regular spring changes every 3500rnds. Currently it has all new springs and pins. But when fired it hesitates a second before chambering a new round from the magazine, it does it every time, regardless of what generation magazine used. I think some of the tolerances may have changed from wear over the years. Might send it back to Glock or just retire it since it has sentimental value.

35000 rounds thats insane! You should get a pic of it on here, as well as a shot with the slide off, just to see if it 'looks' even worn ;)

3000 rounds without cleaning as well, man you gotta find that post. I love seeing proven gun designs hold up to regular people abuse, not some quality controlled durability test that you find in reviews.

a new one...

However, I purchased my Glocks for CCW. They never see the light of day. They are either under my clothes, or in a vault. The courses I take are all indoor, and at night. So, sunlight? No biggie.

Okay, I've got it now...New Rumor of The Week.

Glocks are Vampires! If they see the sunlight, they vaporise!!!! :)

Only 32k and you've about worn it out? So if I shoot only a 1,000 rounds through my Glock a week then I can expect it to last well less then one year? That doesn't sound to good to me.
