My current shoes are getting a bit worn and I was thinking of replacing them with a pair of boots.

Since these would be for everyday wear, I'll need something very comfortable and something that doesn't look too strange with regular street clothes so I could easily wear them with shorts or slacks.

I'm thinking along the lines of a 5" boot since these would look a bit more normal. These are sometimes called quarter-boots since they are short. Here's one that I'm considering.

What are good choices here?

The Magnum: Midnight Plus

The magnum is a good boot. Not the most comfortable or the most rugged, but a good solid boot at that price. They definitely handle like a boot, chunky sole and all.

I would reccomend a brown boot, seems to me like it goes with more casual clothing. Here in an Air Force town everyone has combat type boots.

I have a pair of Redwing boots I swear by, my brother swears by his Woverines. These are more expensive than the Magnum, but worth it in my book. They handle more like a really good pair of shoes, just a bit heavier and bulkier.

After all some say that the secret to life is a comfortable pair of shoes.

If you must wear boots with slacks then you may want to shy away from the leather/nylon combos. I may be misinterpreting your situation but if you're wearing slacks then I'm assuming you spend at least some time in a "business casual" type environment -- otherwise you would have said "jeans" or something like that.

For business casual-type environments, if you must wear boots I would recommend all-leather. During this past winter I've had to wear my Danner Patrol (leather/nylon, 6") boots several times to work (I don't have a car so I walk to work). My office is business casual. On most of those days I brought my casual/dress shoes in my briefcase and changed out of my boots when I got to my office but it wasn't always possible.

The Danner Blackhawk II is a 6" all leather, Gore-Tex boot that may fit your requirements. IMHO the tread is a bit aggressive for office use (I'd prefer something more low profile like a crepe sole instead of the lug sole) but it will do in a pinch.

nice looking boots for casual wear, i shattered my heel and have to wear a insert now so most tennis shoes dont work, does anyone have a price range on these??

The price range for the Midnight Plus is usually around $60-80. I believe theres a steel toe/shank version and there used to be a waterproof version. not sure if I can still find that one.

edit:

Here's the other one.

Super Force 6"

thanks

thanks for the info mr dove i'm in construction so the steel toe & w/proof would be great.looks like a reasonable price to me ;)

yeah, try doing some searches for "midnight plus" and "super force 6". The super force is getting hard to find but its out there. The other versions of the midnight plus are out there too.

I bought these boots about 5 years ago. While I am not particularly hard on boots, these have seen many hundreds of miles, both on road and on trail. They are very comfortable and provide excellent ankle support, which is actually what made me get them in the first place as my ankles are not very good. They have proven very durable and the leather is very tough. They are still completely waterproof, I could stand in a bucket all day and my feet would stay dry.

These go great with any clothes you could want to wear, and can even be used as "dress shoes" in a pinch. If I ever wear them out, I will be buying another pair to replace them.

Hi-tec makes a brown hiking boot (believe it's called the Altitude II) that's real comfortable and comes in between $50-70 bucks depending on where you buy it. I've worn it operationally overseas and around town and it worked well in both roles.

Keen also makes some comfortable trail type boots, but they are a little quirky in design and a bit costly at around $90.

The Oakley assault boot is a good shoe, but my experiences with them in the field is that they wear out faster than expected. Civilian price is around $200 IIRC.

Haven't tired the 5.11 boots yet, but may do so soon as my Hi-tec's need to be replaced and I'd like something that goes up the ankle a bit higher.

At an average of $200 Danner Acadias are not for everyone, but I have been wearing mine since 1997 and they are still going strong.

I typically walk a couple miles a day for exercise and hike six miles up and down mountain trails each week in addition to usual wear at work and around town.

Have to replace the soles every year or two, though, that Vibram eventually wears down.

OK who makes an all-black 8-10" lace-up with the speed-hook type laces?

Danner used to. The Danner Trooper II was the perfect boot - unfortunately discontinued. If I could find some new old stock I'd buy five pair, and be set for the rest of my life...

Also spendy, but http://www.westcoastshoe.com/wesco/ they make all black boots. If you are on a budget, I recommend their factory seconds. They do custom, and everything in between I have a pair of their packers that are amazing, and a pair of 16" motorcycle boots that are unsurpassed in quality.

I wear 8" Danner Striker Side-Zips. Again, stupid name, but quality leather. Comfortable and "dressy" enough to hide under slacks without too much notice.

Having worn Danners, Wolverines (work), Magnums (work), and Hi-Tecs, I've since decided that from now on, I will only wear Dr. Martens for boots. Most comfortable out of the box boot the first time I put my feet into a pair of 8877s.

I like Danner boots. I have two pair of 5 or so inch height. Both pair are very comfortable. In fact, they were as comfortabe out of the box as the well-worn jump boots I acquired in 1968. Suggest you check out Danner's web site and review what Danner's customers say in the product review section.

I wear black leather Red Wings most days. I hike over 4 miles a day in them as its easier (and healthier) to walk than find parking downtown. When I get lazy and ride my motorcycle they are protective enough for that activity.
Over the years Red Wings have proven to be a comfortable and durable boot available in more sizes and widths than believable.
