Evil knife?

Many, many years ago, an old Sioux medicine man told me that you should introduce yourself to a new knife, much as you would to a new dog. Give it a chance to "smell" and "taste" you without quite cutting you. Supposedly that keeps the knife from lashing out at you later.

It's odd, but I don't believe that I've ever been cut by a knife to which I've "introduced" myself.
