Experience with Taurus snubbies?

Always liked the
3". I was very disapointed to find that taurus no longer lists the
three inch guns in their catalog.

(Ancient message, but the thread's popped up again.)

In the 2006 catalog, Taurus does list some 3" wheelguns. I haven't seen any, and would be interested in anyone's impressions who has.

I love my 85 stainless. It's prelock and I've never had a bit of trouble out of it. Pretty accurate and easy to shoot, especially with the snub grips Taurus puts out.

Personally, I'm skeptical about the negative repair comments directed at Taurus. Last year I owned a 44 magnum Tracker that needed to be repaired. I didn't even bother to call them. I just shipped it via UPS and told them in a form I downloaded from their site what needed to be repaired. 3.5 weeks later the Tracker came back repaired and worked great. I sold the Tracker only because I could not afford to buy the ammo for it, or drive 45 miles each way to the one place where I could find 44 special rounds, which were the only ones I liked to shoot out of it.

I currently have a 650 and two 24/7s. Taurus is the only brand I own right now.

Taurus 85 concealed hammer. Probably ten years old. Godawful DA pull, with a trigger return spring that actually forces my finger forward. Have never had a single malfunction, however.

Taurus 669; one of my first handguns. Abused it badly while learning to handload. Eventually shot it loose and caused the barrel to twist. Sent it back with the downloadable form, just like Panthera, and recieved it back within a few weeks, with problems corrected, and no charge even though I had plainly abused the gun.

I have no real problems with Taurus, but just the same, don't plan on buying any more. Old S&W revolvers are mostly inexpensive and mostly terrific.

I think the manta for buying Taurus revolvers should be:

"Examine it with your own hands before you buy it!"

Be wary of buying one without actually checking the trigger, action/lockup, sights, etc... There's a great post somewhere in this forum about how to check revolvers for function when buying.

I've got 3 Tauri:

PT92 Stainless 9mm: worked flawlessly out of the box... 1 stovepiped case in >5K rounds... sent it in for warranty service after I'd screwed up the reassembly after *fully* disassembling it, and I even lost part of that stoopid key lock in the grip. They fixed it for free (minus the next day shipping) and got it back to me in 3 weeks.

651 .357mag snub stainless revolver: also worked beautifully out of the box, no problems after 500 rounds. Remarkably accurate for such a short barrel and simple sights. Locks up tight like it's supposed to. Trigger is MUCH better after dryfiring and a trip to the range.

Tracker 970 22lr stainless: Just got it yesterday; action seems fine, but the barrel appears not to have been fully torqued on, hence the front site appears at about 12:30 when looking through the rear sights. Sending it back for repairs tomorrow.

I've got an 85 that's worked flawlessly since day one. Its quality and workmanship are every bit as good as any J frame Smith (and maybe better than some), right down to the excellent blueing.

I have a Total Titanium concealed hammer snubby. I bought it when Taurus started porting all their snubbies. Mine is not ported. I ordered it expecting it would be but luckily it is not. Initially the double action pull was rough but has smoothed nicely after cleaning it out and a good amount of use. I broke a firing pin after several hundred rounds and several thousand dry fires. I think it took about 3 weeks to get it back. I got the impression that there was only one guy that did all the warranty work. Since then it has been perfect. I bought it to have a left hand pocket gun with reasonable power and as a backup for my normal carry 45. and it is that. I've fired one box of 38's through it, all the rest have been full power Winchester 158gr hollowpoints which it shoots to POA out to 25 yds. It still locks up tight. It is more accurate than I can hold. I don't expect to have to use at that range but it is good to know it will put them there if I need to. Someday a javalina is going to have a bad day:). To me it is the perfect belly gun. It is light, I can shoot it through a jacket pocket and I have confidence in 5 rounds of 357 at contact distance. I shoot a cylinder through it about every other or third range trip, snake out the cylinders and bore, reload it, and put it back in my pocket.

I previously had a stainless model 415 in .41mag with a 2" ported barrel. It was a well made gun that I put over a thousand rounds of full bore mag loads through. But it became trade fodder for my second stainless Ruger Redhawk in the same caliber. I wanted a 4" .41mag to carry afield. I shortened the Redhawk's barrel to 4" to suit my needs.

Its not a snubbie but i have a large frame M44S6 .44 mag. It was built in 95, im the third owner, the first was my friends sisters boyfriend, and he was a freaking moron. Then my friend bought it, and i bought it from him. When i first got it the trigger pull was horrendous, it must have been upwards of 12 pounds. So i took the whole thing apart and noticed what looked like soda syrup gumming up everything. So after a through cleaning it was a completely diffrent animal. Lockup is great, smooth double and crisp single action. Taurus makes a good revolver.

Holy cow! I started this thread almost four years ago.

I've always wondered what possesses someone to reply to a nearly 4 year old thread. Perhaps bestseller92 can enlighten us.

This Taurus M-85 ss (pre lock) has proven 100% reliable with more than 1K rnds. , it weighs about 1 1/2 ozs more than the S&W M-36
Time is not relative here .

Maybe he's been jumped on by moderators and/or wannabe moderators for starting new threeads when old ones already exist.

Not that that would happen here, mind you...:scrutiny: :D

I bought a Taurus 85 stainless .38 with a two-inch barrel. It shot a little low to the left at 15 yards, but other than that it performed great. I bought it about 12 years ago for my wife (but she never used it, she hates shooting). So I sold it a month ago for another gun purchase.

:)

I just bought a Taurus 651 and came to THR to search for feedback since I bought it on a whim without doing any research.

When I typed, "Taurus 651" in the search box this is the first thread that came up.

Anyway, it seems that I should make out ok with the new gun. I already have a Taurus 970 that I love, and my brother has a model 83 that kicks butt.

Been there, done that...

I have done this same thing before. I did a search and found a thread about what I was looking for. I then posted a response, forgetting that it was an old thread. These things happen... Saw the same thing in the classifieds a while back. A guy responded to a "gun for sale" add that was several years old.

Regarding Taurus... I just bought a used 605 snub (basically new) and have yet to take it to the range. It seems to have a good DA trigger and an excellent SA trigger. Everything seems well made and it locks up tight. I'm hoping it ends up being a keeper. I don't like the sights on it since they are hard to see in dim light, but aside from that I am happy so far. The transferable lifetime warranty is a plus.

I have a 850CIA in stainless and had it a couple years and shot probably 200 rounds thru it but after reading all the posts on Taurus I 'am thinking of getting rid of it because I am finding it hard to trust it even though it has never had a problem.

About three years ago, I bought a Taurus 415, 41 Mag. that has a 2 1/2" ported barrel. I got it in steel instead of titanium because I was concerned that the recoil in any relatively light 41 Mag. might make repeat (follow-up) shots more difficult and because the titanium frame would only accentuate any recoil-related problem. It turns out that the 451 is not especially difficult to shoot well and is actually far more pleasant to shoot than my S&W 642 when using +P .38 Specials.

Though in the Taurus larger caliber "snubbie" line of revolvers I preferred the 2 1/2" barrel of the 41 as opposed to the 2" lengths offered in the 44 and 45 calibers, I'm still not fully sold on the ports. A ported barrel does seem to help a little in reducing muzzle "jump" but I'm more than a little concerned about what might happen to your vision if you found it necessary to fire the revolver in a close-quarter situation where it was positioned in a tucked-in, waist level configuration...

Old Thread Old guy...........

About a dozen years ago, I bought a Taurus Mod. 85 SS, 2in. 38Spec.
I never had a misfire with it. I carried it a couple years.
Then I traded up to a Ruger SP101, 2in., 357 Mag. A bit more power.

I guess about 6 or 7 years ago I ran across a Taurus Mod.450-SS, 2 in.
in .45 Colt, for $215. I could not pass it up.
Only thing I do not like is the porting. But, other than that, it's a "honey".

I love to shoot it with, Cowboy or CAS Loads, 250gr.LFN Boolits, at
750 fps. Not sure what kinda "Stopper" it'd be. Not bad, I'd s'pose.
I't a little bulkier than my SP101. but carries Okay, in a Galco, high-ride
pancake holster.
Just the kinda gun, for an old guy, like me.

Aww, anyway.......I buffed it out & it looks nearly like a new one.
Good shooter, at a bargain price, never misses, at 10yrds.
Live deliberately.

Taurus Experience

I like my Taurus guns and have had no problems with sending only two of them for repairs( one was my falt for needing repair) My Taurus Handguns are, Mdl.66 4", Two Mdl.85s 2", Mdl.94 4", Mdl.617 2", Mdl.627 4", Mdl.905 2", Mdl.605 2", and Mdl.608 4".

I have a snubbie .44 tracker. Quality is good, but it's no S&W. It is my carry gun, and I take it with me hiking, or if I am alone at work. I am trying to break the trigger in, as I am not real happy with it.

BTW, I love the ribber grip! And I love the sights in the snubbie! Still wish I had spent the money on a 696 :(

Got a titanium in .45 colt. Good gun, kicks alot, shoots high so 6 o'clock hold is necessary (or the old testicular hold in self defense situatiuons).
