Experience with XS Big Dot Sights

Don't have them on any gun at the moment, but have used them in the past.

The BIG DOT version is great for up-close and personal (or, if you're doing something like IDPA). Sight acquisition is easy.

If you want to do any distant shooting, the LARGE DOT can obscure the target. They also make a smaller front sight, too; same design just a smaller dot. That's what I'll use the next time I have to buy sights.

I've tried them on a 1911, Glock 19, and a SIG 226.

I didn't find they allowed faster sight acquisition at closer distances, but I did find that they were much harder to use at further distances.

The most irritating aspect of them is that the top of the front sight blade is rounded, rather than flat

Some of us with aging eyes would be happy to notice the difference between a rounded and flat front sight... ;)

Sounds as though YOU don't really need BIG DOT sights.

I have the Big XS Dot sights on my carry snubby revolver . For up-close CCW they are good for quick Point and shoot. I do not have them on my home defense guns .

Amen, though my eyes are still young, just bad.

I put a set of Big Dots on my Glock 21 recently. I like it in that it makes picking up the sight really, really fast (good for CCW/HD gun) but I'm still needing to spend more time with them to get my POA/POI down even at relatively short ranges (<15 yards). It shoots a bit lower than I'm used to.

Unfortunately for the Glock a new 1911 has taken all its range time, so it languishes in the safe for the time being.

Have the XS Big Dots on both my Shield and P380. Had them on a G26 also.

My vision is such that it is difficult for me to bring the front sight into focus. With that big white dot sitting up there I do quite well at SD distances (7-10 yds) and that is all I am concerned with.

They may not work for everyone, but they certainly do for me.

I also disliked the round profile of the front sight, which makes it hard to use the sight outlines for more precise shooting during daylight hours. The Big Dot is a bit much... I really like the XS Standard Dot on small revolvers, though. For semiautos I prefer the Ameriglo I-Dot / Trijicon HD type of sights. The front sight is definitely more noticeable... without being so huge it blots out your target.

That may be true. But I due tend to address software issues with software (training/practice) :)

I had a chance to shoot a Ruger LCR a while back that was equipped with the XS Standard Dot and it worked pretty well with the low profile rear groove.

I only got a chance to put a couple of hundred rounds through it, but it was an improvement over a S&W J-frame that I was comparing it to...but it might have just been the gun too

That's exactly the gun I had. I had one of the now-discontinued Ruger LCRs with the smooth boot grip and XS standard dot tritium sight. I compared it favorably to J-frames with the exception of aesthetics.

Have them on my Hi-Power.
Not really good for the range except at close distances say 12 yards or less.

For CCW work awesome!!!
Your eyes pick up that bog meatball of a front sight immediately.

An XS ghost ring came stock on an 870 I owned. Did not care for that sight system at all and removed it the first week I had the shotgun. Replaced it with a red dot instead. XS use lots of two dot sight systems which I am not a fan of at all. I prefer 3 dot for faster and more accurate shooting. A good 3 dot Trijicon or Fiber optic set is a better investment in my opinion.

I love the on on my 3" j frame but i put a set on my XDs and don't really care for it. My eyes aren't the best and i shoot right handed left eye dominant. My favorite setup is the Truglo TFO with green in front and yellow on the rear. The green seems a little brighter and my eye goes rite to it.

I put them on my S&W457 and love them, these eyes are getting a little old. They are good for close up shooting and quick target sighting that's why they are on my carry gun.

Thanks for all of the comments.

This time I am just going to have the sights relamped. My eyesight is still good enough to see a square front sight. In another 10 years they will need to be relamped again and maybe by that time my eyes will need the big dot.
