Explain the Ruger #1 to me

Rugers just seem clunky to me,and I own a few. I think the Brownings are a lot prettier.

Sort of like the lines of a bolt these days but the singles have a place.

Shanghai McCoy

I like the Mannlicher full stock look to begin with; very clean and stylish. As to the 7x57 chambering, I guess it's more of a European kind of thing. Like I said, I can't explain it (haven't hunted in years anyways), but I sure would like one!

I must have had a rare one because I never seem to see the RSI in 243 that I owned come up for sale.

I have had two. one in 7mag, one rsi in 7 mauser. the 7 mag was a great gun. the rsi was great till I shot it. very whippy and no accuracy.

Might be helpful to check out the Ruger Forum(s) for info on your RSI. I don't know anything about low volume production on any of the Ruger's. It seems like there are a bewildering number of small runs of calibers in Number One's.

I'm a sucker for a Mannlicher stock too and the 7x57 just seems to go with that configuration.

Lol my father in law has a 10-22 international, and that was a similar story. We all loved it till we took it out back and shot it. It’s the only inaccurate 10-22 I’ve ever personally seen.

I suspect that those that have them in 243 love them so much they don't sell them!

The #1 is one of the few mannlicher stocked rifles I really like.
The other is the m77

WOW!
$1500 for an RSI in 7x57? With a split forestock!
I, last week got one with a Leupold VariX III 1.5-5 scope, for $750!

And btw, I was expecting 3-5moa accuracy. But, 139gr Hornady BTSP’s over 46.5gr IMR4350 in PPU nup cases @ 3.05” gave 1moa 3-shots and 5-Shot groups runnin 1.5-2moa. First two shots were usually touching. Surprised me! Pleasantly!!!

I put the 1.5-5 on a Remlin 1894 .44mag. Put an ancient 2-8 Burris on the RSI.
Plan to use it on an upcoming WMA hunt. Got two does last year with my 7mm08.

I actually consider it “chunky”. Heavy but balances well. Always wanted a #1.

Only time I’ve shot one was a .45-70 sportier weight that was loaded up to .458 Win Mag level

:what:

Took the shine off that in a hurry. One shot. My shoulder was black and blue for weeks

My Number One H in 375 actually works out very well. The the rifle is accurate. The stock is straight. This means no punishing jolt. Ditto, the Number One in 458. Also, shooting from the sitting position with a heavy recoiling rifle gives an exaggerated sensation of the kick. If you shoot sitting down try a few rounds standing. I speak of shooting sitting without lead sled or any such. Loading up 45-70 to magnum levels is an anathema to me. Bias comes from shooting black powder loads in single shot rifles. YMMV

I have two, my first was a .338WM that I brought for an African safari plains game hunt. It was not a tack driver out of the box. 3" groups with premium ammo. A bit of fore end work helped a little, maybe 2". Handloads brought it into 3/4" groups with Barnes X bullets and cheaper Speer soft points. Never could get Nosler partitions to shoot through it. Added Magna-Port and made it a joy to shoot.

I put over 300 rounds through it testing and load development, tried every premium ammo that was on the market at the time. NO factory ammo would shoot better than 2" groups, some "Safari" ammo shot 3"+. When you buy a box of ammo that costs $40+ in the early 1990's you would expect it to shoot better.

My second #1 is in .223, dropped a cheaper BSA scope on it and loaded a handful of 50gr Vmax bullets up with a random guess of powder. 1/2" groups first try. Never bothered to try to develop a better load.

I still lust after nice #1's I come across, but prices are going crazy for some.

I almost bought one last summer. Went in a little small town gun shop and they had one in 270 in nice shape for $550. The serial number was first year production. My gun budget was already blown so I decided to sleep on it. It was gone the next day when I went to buy it. Been kicking myself since.
