Hello everyone -
This is a bit of a specific inquiry. I run factory Remington extension mags on my 870s because I think they are the best.
The reason I think they are the best is because in my youth I have used both Choate and Scattergun Tech extensions and found them both lacking in one area.
I like to use a magazine bracket/clamp for rigiditiy of the mag, a good place to mount a sling swivel, and most importantly, to keep the mag from unscrewing during recoil.
When using these mags (Choate and Scattergun) I had noticed that the Choate mag clamp would slide down the barrel after a few rounds. If I did not use the clamp, the mag would begin to unscrew. I know alot of people do not use a clamp, but I insist on doing so.
The reason I love the Remington factory extension is that the screw for the bracket goes into a dimple in the mag tube, and keeps the bracket/clamp from sliding down the barrel.
So, after that long story, I want more rounds. I currently run two 870s with 18" barrels and 6 shot extensions. I would lilke to alter one gun to a 22" vent with corresponding mag tube. This will probably make it a 8+1 gun. Remington sells a good mag on the Competition Master, but will not sell me the mag tube. My smith is trying, but the situation looks bleak.
Have any of you shotgunners found a remedy to the sliding mag braket/clamp problem? Maybe a dip in that rubber sold for tool handles? I had tried friction tape to no effect. I also thought of a screw through the end of the mag to prevent the tube from turning out.
Thanks in advance and sorry for the length.
