Hello everyone -

This is a bit of a specific inquiry. I run factory Remington extension mags on my 870s because I think they are the best.

The reason I think they are the best is because in my youth I have used both Choate and Scattergun Tech extensions and found them both lacking in one area.

I like to use a magazine bracket/clamp for rigiditiy of the mag, a good place to mount a sling swivel, and most importantly, to keep the mag from unscrewing during recoil.

When using these mags (Choate and Scattergun) I had noticed that the Choate mag clamp would slide down the barrel after a few rounds. If I did not use the clamp, the mag would begin to unscrew. I know alot of people do not use a clamp, but I insist on doing so.

The reason I love the Remington factory extension is that the screw for the bracket goes into a dimple in the mag tube, and keeps the bracket/clamp from sliding down the barrel.

So, after that long story, I want more rounds. I currently run two 870s with 18" barrels and 6 shot extensions. I would lilke to alter one gun to a 22" vent with corresponding mag tube. This will probably make it a 8+1 gun. Remington sells a good mag on the Competition Master, but will not sell me the mag tube. My smith is trying, but the situation looks bleak.

Have any of you shotgunners found a remedy to the sliding mag braket/clamp problem? Maybe a dip in that rubber sold for tool handles? I had tried friction tape to no effect. I also thought of a screw through the end of the mag to prevent the tube from turning out.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the length.

remington has put the mag extention in the police only area.not for sale to anything other than police/mill.we use them on our combat build-ups as well as the lyman tube.rem. tubes cost me 45.00 and the lyman tubes a 25.00 it's a good spread in price.the only thing about the rem tubes is to follow the instructions on tube tightning for spring bind.in all the time of building and testing my guns,i have never had a clamp slide on me.it might be the finish on the gun but they stay put.so a rem. tube sounds like a good way to go for you.let me know if your smith can't come up with one,i see what i can do.

The plastic dip idea would work, but if the barrel gets really hot, the plastic melts.
You can also Super Glue some small, very thin rubber pads inside the clamp

Other options are:
Buy the super expensive Clark clamp carried by Brownell's.
This is a much heavier, machined clamp not a stamping like all the others, and it stays put better since it makes more contact with the barrel and tube.
The problem is the $45.00 price.

Another option is, make up a new clamp screw and nut.
The Choate screw with the swivel, and the thin nut strip if you tighten them down too tight.
I use hardened 1/8" Allen head or slotted head machine screws or bolts, with a regular machine nut.
These can be torqued down much tighter without stripping, but require either a Allen wrench or screwdriver to remove.

Another idea would be to weld a stop lug on the magazine tube.
All that would be required is a small lug welded or silver brazed on the tube that would prevent the clamp from moving forward.

Although I wouldn't trust it for a long period of time, I imagine a soft soldered lug would also do, and possible even an epoxied lug might hold.

Generally speaking, if you REALLY tighten down the clamps screw, they stay put, but you will likely need to replace the screw when it strips.
