So, for those of you who buy factory ammo :

1. What criteria do you use to figure out what you want to buy ? Price, quality, lack of quality ?

2. What do you primarily buy shelf ammo for ? Targets ? SD/HD ? Hunting ?

3. What are some of the irritating things that turn you off to certain brands of ammo ?

I bought a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem and it loves Remington 200 gr Coreloct but I can't find it anywhere...... online or local. It shoots cloverleafs. Fom

In a semi auto pistol I want ammo that the pistol can eat. For a revolver I want ammo that is predictable with good expansion. For a rifle I don't care that the ammo is tack driving accurate. If the ammo will hold a 4" group at 200 yards I am happy with that. I am not an Olympic marksman, just a simple hunter. For the shotgun I am far to lazy to list all the things I prefer. We need to start another thread for shotgun ammo.

1. Target ammo I buy the cheapest stuff I can find that is either brass or aluminum cased. I am not a fan of steel case ammo for anything but an AK. Typically I buy commercial remanufactured ammo (Freedommunitions or Georgia Arms).

SD/HD ammo I only buy quality, proven ammo (gold dot, HST, golden saber, ranger)

Hunting ammo, I prefer Hornady, as my rifle shoots this well.

2. I don't reload at this time, so all ammo I shoot is commercial.

3. I really haven't found an ammo I avoid. I primarily shoot Glocks and Rugers that eat pretty much anything. Hunting rifles are bolt or lever guns, and basically same...will eat most anything.

1. Price primarily. Quality in my SD ammo is paramount.

2. SD only now.

3. Nothing really turns me off. Crazy marketing hype is something I don't like.

If I buy ammo from the store it is usually high velocity .22's if I can find them. After that I'm looking for the cheapest brass cased ammo I can find for shooting targets. Most irritating thing doesn't have to do with the ammo, but rather restrictions on how much you can buy, if it's there to buy.

I buy any ammo that works in my guns for target practice, price is the #1 consideration for that. Self defense rounds are only major brands like Winchester PDX1 and the like, cost is not a factor.

I'd like to reload but I really don't have the time or space to do it.

When I am wandering aimlessly in a major retailer that sells ammunition if I see quality ammunition on sale for a good price I buy it. I like the quality stuff so I end up with good brass because I like to roll my own. This is especially true of handgun ammunition. I do about the same for rifle ammunition.

Most of my shooting is target.

Whenever I see any 22 LR for sale I always buy some. Likely why the current drought hasn't had any effect on me or my friends and family.

1. Would be price and quality. I want good brass. I'll shoot the stuff for general target not expecting too much.

2. Would be target and general storage. If I have the extra cash I just buy it and store it away.

3. Nothing really beyond I won't buy cheap steel cased or aluminum cased stuff as it doesn't suit my needs.

So , a few gunshops around here are selling some "factory remanufactured" rifle ammo....

Does this stuff appeal to anyone ? ( hey, at least it has primer holes in all the rounds, right ? ) Black hills is doing it, as well as one group selling .223 with hornady ballistic tip bullets in vac sealed bags instead of bullet boxes.

A few of the smaller outfits are offering higher-end precison rifle rounds cased with Lapua or Nosler bras- does this tickle anyones fancy ?

One outfit I've found is offering hand-loaded and inspected SD/HD rounds in a variety of calibers and bullet types- but its nearing $1.50 a round. Would you pay more for a guarantee that your SD/HD ammo was individually loaded by a ballistician, so as to be free of a lot of the defects we see in mass produced factory ammo ?

Apparently a lot is being tried in this vacuum to make your dollar "worth" alittle bit more- either in higher volume, or higher quality, than the standard big box ammo outfits.

I'm with DeerFreak. You'll end up finding some ammo that isn't very compatible with your pistol if you haven't already. Me, I won't buy WWB for my SR9 no matter what. It just makes it jam.

My P95 eats WWB very well. I am amazed your SR9 hangs up with WWB. When things return to normal aguila ammo is very high quality for the price. Right before the election I bought 2,000 rounds of 124 gr FMJ aguila for $160 plus shipping. Aguila 124 gr ammo is comparable to Winchester Ranger NATO 124 gr at SAAMI pressure.

So, for instance the Black Hills .223 and .308 in the blue box that are about $10 less than new are out ? Or are you just referring to gun show reloads ?

1. Normally price. Especially if it is just plinking/training ammo. Over time you might notice that you like the way a certain ammo behaves and gravitate towards it when available. I like S&B in .38 Special because it seems a little hotter than average.

2. Target ammo 95% of the time. I bought a 50-round box of Gold Dots about 3 years ago and still have 40-something rounds left. Properly stored it will last quite awhile. I might pick up another 20-round box of SD ammo for kicks, now that you mention it.

3. Mostly packaging issues. I understand the need to cut corners, but some manufacturers go a little too far. Not a deal-breaker mind you - just irritating.

quality first even in plinking ammo

2. What do you primarily buy shelf ammo for ? Targets ? SD/HD ? Hunting ?

80% SD/HD split 50/50 practice and actual carry ammo
20% hunting

dirty sooty ammo, anything that would lead to cleaning of guns, I hate cleaning guns.

All reloads. Factory re-manufactured, Gunshow's, Joe Bob's, whatever. Id rather pay a few dollars more and never have to worry.

I don't exclude all re-manufactured ammunition. Case in point years ago I was buying quite a bit of Black Hills .223. Never a problem and it was then using Lake City brass which was a nice side benefit. Black Hills had a pretty good reputation back then and grouped well for me. Good stuff, good brass and reasonably priced.

That does not mean I would stroll into a gun show today and buy a thousand rounds of something totally unknown loaded with care in Billy Bob's basement or garage. It just means I have little reservation buying re-manufactured ammunition with a good reputation made by a reliable company. Heck, recently there has been no shortage of complaints about factory new ammunition manufactured by for example Winchester.

Just My Take
Ron

1. Price and quality are both factors in my process.
2. All three but the factory ammo I buy is mostly rimfire.
3. The irritating things are usually availability and preceived value or the lack of.

1. I like match grade ammo, doesnt have to be top of the line but I prefer to hit consistantly on target with my ammo.
2. I buy ammo for everything target, hunt, skeet etc.
3. I dont like smokey ammo, the kind where your gagging from the unburnt powder ball that engulfs you with obnoxious odor (that is why I avoid Remington pistol ammo).

Reliability is my top priority, specifically finding ammo that works reliably in all my guns of a particular caliber. Price is also a major factor, but availability has trumped price in many cases over the past several months. I'm not measuring performance with a chrono or gel, just looking at problem-free operation, but some of the brands I was finding at good prices - Aguila, Armscor, and Fiocchi in particular - are harder to find and often cost the same as other brands. Reliability of all three brands has been great compared to my results with Remington UMC, WWB and S&B in 9mm. Nothing has given me any trouble in .223 except for Tula in one rifle, so I'm a bit more open to trying different brands.

If I could have my way, I'd just buy Fiocchi Extrema JHPs for carry and Aguila FMJs (9mm) for the range all the time, but they have been few and far between.

Thanks oneounceload. I just ordered 4 boxes. They are the only one with it in stock. Fom
