Howdy folks. This isn't really a reloading question, but seeing as how you fellas would be more likely to have experience or at least knowledge in this area, I figured I'd come here first.

I recently acquired a '94 Winchester in 30-30. Not my first, I have one in 38-55 as well, but I plan to go on my first deer hunt this winter and couldn't stand the thought of putting a scope on it, so I picked up a good ol' fashioned dirty thirty.

It's a good shooter, the action is pretty worn in and quite sloppy (it's been very well used before it got to me) but it's very accurate and hasn't had any issues with being fired over the hundred or so rounds I've put through it. However, I've noticed that almost every casing comes out with a protruding primer, that possibly looks a little flattened (not alarmingly so but combined with backing out, definitely something that caught my eye being a reloader myself).

Just to be clear, I have tried three brands of factory ammo in it now (Remington, Federal, and Winchester). All three have shown the same signs. No reloads yet, I've acquired the necessary equipment, but this is specifically happening with factory ammo.

As I mentioned, the action is very sloppy. I'm not a gunsmith by any stretch of the imagination, but it makes me wonder if perhaps the cartridge is not being very well supported or something to that effect. This is also my first foray into 30-30, so maybe this is just more common than I would have guessed. Never experienced anything like it in my other Winchester though, granted I've mostly only fired relatively low power reloads through that one.

Just curious if you folks would find any of this to be a little worrisome. It doesn't appear to be an issue, but I don't want to find out that it is in the wrong way...

I can add pictures if necessary. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your input, that's kind of what made sense to me just from intuition, but not having the knowledge to back it up I'm glad to hear some affirmation of that idea.

The thirty headspace on the rim and you might still have excessive headspace. You should be able to do some simple checks with tape on the back of the case.

Interesting, I haven't heard of that technique before. What am I looking for in taping the back of the case?
