Failure to fall into battery?

I noticed today when hand cycleing my springfield 1911 GI that if I cycle downward with no round feeding in the chamber the slide will stop short and the barrel stops short of falling into the battery. However if I hand cycle it upward or strait forward it falls into battery just fine. From what I understand this may be a timing issue and if it gets worse could lead to three point jamming. What could be the cause of this and how could I repair this issue. Is it a barrel link fitting issue? Keep in mind of course that this weapon is fully cleaned and lubercated properly.
